17 Folklore from West Java

The following is a collection of Indonesian folklore, folktales, fairy tales, and legends that exist in the midst of the Sundanese tribe community in West Java Province.

Many West Java's tales are popular in Indonesia such as Sangkuriang, Si Kabayan, Lutung Kasarung, Telaga Warna, Situ Bagendit, Ciung Wanara and other stories.

The name Girilawungan comes from the Sundanese language 'Ngalawung' which means 'face to face'. It is said that in that place the Majapahit forces had once carried out a 'ngalawung' action waiting for Giri Larang's daughter to come out of her hiding place, because they felt ashamed if they had to return to the Majapahit kingdom without success.

Si Kabayan Sick is a folklore of Indonesia. One day Si Kabayan was sick. He suffered from colds and coughs. During a day off Si Kabayan was just curled up in his room. On the previous evening Si Kabayan was wet and cold by the rainfall. Nyi Iteung, his wife, worried look at the condition of Kabayan. Nyi Iteung then took Kabayan go to the health center.

According to legend, the eldest daughter of King Tapa Agung, namely Purbararang, has a bad character, rude, arrogant, cruel and often jealous of anyone. Contrary to the eldest, the youngest daughter is Purbasari have good qualities, friendly, humble, soft, and like to help others. 

Sangkuriang
It is said that a long time ago, there was a wild boar that was thirsty. In the middle of the forest, the wild boar saw the water accommodated in a taro leaf. It then drank the water because feel thirsty. The wild boar did not realize, that the water are a urine of a famous King, Sungging Perbangkara. King Sungging Perbangkara have supranatural power. Because it drinking a urine of a powerful king, the wild boar then pregnant. Nine months later, it gave birth to a female human child.

Telaga Warna Legend
It is said, in ancient times there were kingdoms in West Java called Kutatanggeuhan. This Kingdoms ruled by a wise king. Residents used to call the king's kingdom as King Suwartalaya. Although successfully ruled his kingdom with justice, but the King has a problem that made him restless. He does not have a child who will inherit his kingdom. Finally, the king decided to be imprisoned in the forest to invoke Almighty God guide.
