The Story of Nyi Mas Belimbing

Nyi Mas Belimbing dreams of meeting a handsome young man from Cirebon named Sunan Gunung Jati. He fell in love with Sunan Gunung Jati even though he only met through a dream. Her deep love makes Nyi Mas feel sad and always pensive for days. This is known by his father Resi Rarata.
The Story of Nyi Mas Belimbing

Rishi Rarata asked his daughter about the cause of her sadness. Nyi Mas later admitted that he loved a young man whom he only met through dreams. The young man was named Sunan Gunung Jati in Cirebon. Nyi Mas Belimbing then asked permission from her father that she wanted to go to Cirebon to meet her idol, Sunan Gunung Jati.

Rishi Rarata did not allow his daughter to go to Cirebon on the grounds that it was inappropriate for a woman to come to a man. Rishi Rarata advised his daughter, that if indeed the two of them were destined, God would bring them together.

Nyi Mas was unable to refute his father's prohibition. He tried to forget his love for Sunan Gunung Jati but could not. The more he tries to forget his love, the more his love grows. Finally Nyi Mas Belimbing no longer able to refrain from meeting her lover.

One morning, when Rishi Rarata was still asleep in his sleep, Nyi Mas Belimbing went quietly from the hermitage in Ujung Kulon to Cirebon to meet Sunan Gunung Jati. He ignored the prohibition of his parents because he was unable to hold back his longing. Nyi Mas walked alone to Cirebon without telling anyone.

It turned out that the departure of Nyi Mas Belimbing was known by Ki Pandan Alam. For a long time Ki Pandan Alam had put his heart on Nyi Mas. When he found out his idol girl was trying to meet another man, he was burning with jealous fire. He was not willing his idol girl belonged to someone else. So without thinking, Ki Pandan Alam decided to follow Nyi Mas Belimbing to Cirebon.

Quickly Ki Pandan Alam tried to catch up with Nyi Mas. After traveling halfway, finally Ki Pandan was able to catch up to Nyi Mas Belimbing. Ki Pandan tried to persuade Nyi Mas Belimbing to undo his intention to meet Sunan Gunung Jati which of course was rejected outright by Nyi Mas Belimbing. Ki Pandan Alam, who was angry with burning jealous fire, finally used violence to force Nyi Mas Belimbing to return to Ujung Kulon, but Nyi Mas still refused. Then the battle between the two was inevitable. Ki Pandan Alam lost. Apparently he was unable to match the magic power of Nyi Mas. Ki Pandan Alam, who was ashamed and angry over his defeat, complained to his father, Sang Hyang Tenggulung.

Sang Hyang Tenggulung could not bear to see his son grieved. He then suggested that his son impersonate Sunan Gunung Jati. Ki Pandan Alam certainly agreed. With just one snap of Sang Hyang Tenggulung's finger, Ki Pandan Alam changed its form to become Sunan Gunung Jati. Soon Ki Pandan Alam returned following Nyi Mas Belimbing who had almost arrived in Cirebon.

Without suspicion, Nyi Mas Belimbing who really wanted to meet with Sunan Gunung Jati, accepted the presence of Ki Pandan Alam, and was willing to be married. They also lived in Cirebon for some time. Nyi Mas Belimbing is very happy because she succeeded in marrying a young idol, as well as Ki Pandan Alam.
But as clever as Ki Pandan Alam disguised, finally revealed. Cirebon sultanate gave the punishment to Ki Pandan Alam because of his impudence. Stay Nyi Mas Belimbing who was disappointed and sad because he felt he had been fooled. He was ashamed to return to the hermitage, also afraid because he had broken his father's orders. Finally because of the shame Nyi Mas Belimbing decided to end his life. Nyi Mas was later buried in Cirebon.

A few months later there was an oddity, from the tomb of Nyi Mas the sound of a baby crying. That of course made the people living around the Nyi Mas tomb be in an uproar. The community then reported the incident to Sunan Gunung Jati. Immediately Sunan Gunung Jati ordered to dismantle the grave of Nyi Mas Belimbing. After being dismantled, it turns out in the grave there is a cute baby boy. Sunan Gunung Jati immediately raised the baby boy to be his child and gave it the name Cikal.

According to the story, after Cikal grew up, he loved going wandering. In his wandering, Cikal had met with the Prophet Khaidir. Interested in Cikal's intelligence, the Prophet Khaidir appointed him a student. He traveled with the Prophet Khaidir and never returned to Cirebon. True or not this story no one knows for sure.

Nyi Mas Belimbing is the daughter of a hermit named Resi Rarata who lives in the Ujung Kulon hermitage in Banten province now. According to the folklore from West Java, Nyi Mas Belimbing lived together with Sunan Gunung Jati.
