Folklore From Riau

The following is a collection of Indonesian folklore, folktales, fairy tales, and legends that exist among the people of Riau Province.

Riau Province, with the capital city of Pekanbaru, is in the central part of the island of Sumatra, bordering the Provinces of North Sumatra, West Sumatra and Jambi Provinces.

Stories are collected from various sources. If there is a new story, it will be added soon. Hope it will be useful.

2. Si Lancang
Si Lancang
The folklore of Si Lancang comes from the Kampar area, Riau Province. In ancient times, it is said that in the Kampar area there lived the Lancang together with his mother. Their lives are both very, very poor. Si Lancang makes a living by working as a farmer.

1. Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih
Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih
It is said that long ago in a village, there lived a girl named Bawang Putih who lived with her father.  Bawang Putih's mother has passed away after suffering a serious illness. Not far from their house, lived a widow who had a daughter named Bawang Merah.
