This is a folklore about Lutung Kasarung, folklore of West Java, Indonesia. Once upon a time, there was an ancient kingdom called Kingdom of Pasir Batang, in West Java, Indonesia now. Pasir Batang kingdom led by Prabu Tapa Agung. Prabu Tapa Agung had seven daughters, namely Purbararang, Purbadewata, Purbaendah, Purbakancana, Purbamanik, Purbaleuih, and Purbasari the youngest.
According to legend, the eldest daughter of King Tapa Agung, namely Purbararang, has a bad character, rude, arrogant, cruel and often jealous of anyone. Contrary to the eldest, the youngest daughter is Purbasari has good qualities, friendly, humble, soft, and like to help others.
Purbasari Replaces His Father, Leading The Kingdom
After a long time lead the kingdom, it was time for Prabu Tapa Agung to think about his successor. He decided that the youngest Purbasari appropriate to replace him lead the kingdom of Pasir Batang. The King did not want to give up throne in Purbararang, the eldest daughter. Because she has a bad temper, she was considered inappropriate to lead the kingdom. The King worry, if Purbararang led kingdom, the peace of the people living Pasir Batang be damaged.
The King called all his daughter also all royal princes to hand over Pasir Batang throne on his youngest daughter, Purbasari. Prabu Tapa Agung then left the royal palace Pasir Batang to start a new life as a hermit.
Purbararang as eldest daughter very angry against her father's decision gives power not on herself, but on her younger sister. Her character appears. The day after the inauguration Purbasari as the Queen of the Kingdom of Pasir Batang, Purbararang contact his fiancée, Indrajaya. They both went to an evil witch to ask for help to harm Purbasari.
After meeting an evil witch and reported their intentions, the evil witch then give them both a black powder. Wicked witch ordered that they both must spread the black powder around the body of Purbasari.
Arriving in the kingdom, they both immediately seek opportunities to spread the black powder to Purbasari. After successfully throw black powder, throughout the body of Purbasari including the face, dark patches appeared very terrible. None empire people know that the culprit is Purbararang.
Purbasari Exiled
Purbararang said that Purbasari been condemned to have a terrible disease that does not deserve to be the Queen of the Kingdom of Pasir Batang. Purbararang then took the throne of Pasir Batang. She immediately alienate Purbasari to the forest. Purbararang reasoned that the disease is not contagious to others. Uwak Batara Lengser as royal adviser was unable to do anything but obey Purbararang.
In Heaven
While in heaven was going stir. Guruminda reluctant to marry a prince nymph heaven as his mother request, Sunan Ambu. He just wants to marry a beautiful girl just like her mother's beauty. Sunan Ambu does have a remarkable beauty.
Sunan Ambu explained that a woman as beautiful as she is only lives in human world. If Prince Guruminda insisted on marrying a woman as beautiful as herself, then the condition is, the Prince must be willing to go down to the human world. He must masquerade as a monkey. "You must be willing to come down to earth as a monkey. In human world, your name is Lutung Kasarung. Are you able to live?"Asked Sunan Ambu.

Guruminda prince was willing to undergo the requirements to become a monkey because curious to know who the girl in the human world are as beautiful as his mother. Once transformed into a monkey, Prince Guruminda then go jump into the human world. In the human world, thanks to his power, Kasarung beat all-langur monkeys. In a short time, Lutung Kasarung was appointed as leader of the langur monkeys kingdom.
From the stories he heard, Kasarung finally know that the kingdom of Pasir Batang led by an evil queen named Purbararang. He intends to give lessons to the Queen Purbararang. Kasarung then scheming to learn that the Queen Purbararang want to perform sacrificial animals in the woods hunting. He deliberately let himself be captured by the messengers of Queen Purbararang. Kasarung then taken to the palace of the kingdom of Pasir Batang.
In the royal palace, when Lutung Kasarung be used as sacrificial animals, monkey Kasarung suddenly incredible rampage to cause damage everywhere. The soldiers Pasir Batang failed to disarm. Kasarung showed hostility to the kingdom Pasir Batang. Only to Uwak Batara Lengser its looks respect.
Knowing Lutung respect for Uwak Batara Lengser, the Queen Purbararang told Uwak Batara Lengser to catch Kasarung. Once captured, Uwak Batara Lengser then takes Kasarung to the place Purbasari exiled in the forest. Purbararang hope that Kasarung can be used to kill Purbasari.
Lutung Kasarung And Purbasari Become A Friend
Arriving at the forest, Uwak Batara Lengser told Kasarung that in the forest there lived Purbasari, the youngest daughter of Prabu Tapa Agung. "Kasarung, Purbasari is a kind hearthed princess. She was supposed to be a queen Kingdom of Pasir Batang. However, because of the evil power finally she was exiled to the forest. Please take care of her well. Will you keep it O monkey magic? "Said Batara Uwak Lengser.
Kasarung nodded its head in agreement that it's would keep the Princess Purbasari. Since that time Kasarung into guard and friend of Princess Purbasari. Sadness slowly began to disappear from the face of Princess Purbasari because she has a friend who is always entertaining and keep her safe. Kasarung also always meet the needs of food Purbasari. Kasarung ordered his subordinates to find fruits. Over time the affection arise between them. Princes Purbasari loved Kasarung and vice versa.
Unnoticed by Princess Purbasari, Kasarung appealed to his mother in heaven, Sunan Ambu, to make Princess Purbasari a beautiful garden and also a place to shower. Sunan Ambu then sends the poet magic and the Angels to create a garden. The angel also make a wonderful shower for Princess Purbasari. Purbasari bathing place called Jamban Salaka. The shower is made of pure gold. The walls and floor are made of marble. Water for showers comes from the lake is very clear. The angel also made clothes for Purbasari, made of very beautifull clouds.
Purbasari Recover From Her Illlness
When Princess Purbasari try bathing in the toilet Salaka, weirdness ensued. Black powder which is attached to her face and body, disappear instantly. Kasarung was to be amaze by the beauty of the original Princess Purbasari which its considers as beautiful as her mother, Sunan Ambu.
The loss of Purbasari disease finally came up to the kingdom palace. Purbararang queen wondered how Purbasari disease in the body can be lost. He worried Purbasari recovery will threaten his throne as Queen of the Kingdom of Pasir Batang. She then invited his fiancée Indrajaya into the woods to meet Purbasari. Sure enough, she saw with his own eyes that Purbasari has healed. Purbasari had recovered pretty normal.
Worry about losing the throne, Queen Purbararang then give Purbasari a challenge. She challenged to compete hair length. "O Purbasari, lets we compete hair length. If my hair is longer than your hair, then your head will be cut off by the executioner's palace." Said Purbararang. Having pitted hair turns Purbararang still less than the length of hair Purbasari.
Still not give up, Purbararang then filed a second challenge. "If your fiance is more handsome than my fiance, then you should take the throne as Queen of the Kingdom. But if not, then your head will be cut off by the royal executioner." Said Purbararang.
Purbasari feel confused given the challenge. Everyone already knows the handsome of Indrajaya, Purbararang fiance. While she herself did not have a fiance. Because of the confusion, she then holding Kasarung's hands, her close friend. "Kasarung, you always be my friends and take care of me all the time. You should be my husband." Said Purbasari.
Listening to Purbasari, Purbararang laughing. "So that ugly monkey is your fiance O Purbasari.?" Purbararang said with a laugh.
"Yes." Purbasari replied curtly, nodding.
Purbararang immediately ordered the royal executioner to behead Purbasari, because fiance Purbasari only an ugly monkey, not comparable to Indrajaya good looks, his fiancee.
Do not stay silent, Lutung Kasarung immediately sitting cross-legged. Its eyes were closed and its mouth moving. Suddenly the thick smoke appears enveloped the body of Kasarung. After the smoke is gone, Kasarung monkey has been transformed into a handsome prince named Guruminda. More handsome than Indrajaya.
Princess Purbasari Back Being Queen Kingdom of Pasir Batang
Everyone in that place are shocked. Prince Guruminda then explained that he was Prince Guruminda of heaven. He accidentally fell to earth disguised as Kasarung. He also said that the Queen of the Kingdom of Pasir Batang actually is Princess Purbasari. Queen Purbararang finally admitted that she has lost the bet. Then, the Queen Purbararang must give the throne on Purbasari.
There is no other choice but to give up the throne Purbararang on Purbasari. She apologized for all her mistakes. Princess Purbasari forgive her elder sister mistakes. Not long after, the Queen Purbasari married Prince Guruminda. People's Kingdom of Pasir Batang now live in peace as led by the Queen Purbasari fair wise.
