The following is a collection of Indonesian folklore, folktales, fairy tales, and legends passed down among the people of Maluku Province. Maluku Province has its capital in the city of Ambon and carries the motto "Siwa Lima," meaning shared ownership. These stories have been gathered from various sources (see references). New stories will be added from time to time — we hope you enjoy them.
Long, long ago, in a forest on the Aru Islands of Maluku, there lived a herd of deer famous for their swift, graceful running. Whenever a new animal came to settle in the forest, the deer would challenge it to a race, for it was said that whoever won the race would earn the right to live in that land.
