It is said that a long time ago, there was a wild boar that was thirsty. In the middle of the forest, the wild boar saw the water accommodated in a taro leaf. It then drank the water because feel thirsty. The wild boar did not realize, that the water are a urine of a famous King, Sungging Perbangkara. King Sungging Perbangkara have supranatural power. Because it drinking a urine of a powerful king, the wild boar then pregnant. Nine months later, it gave birth to a female human child.
The Birth of Dayang Sumbi
King Sungging Perbangkara told by his people, that there is a pig gave birth to a daughter. King Perbangkara finally realize that the pig must have been drinking his urine. He immediately go to the woods to look for the baby. Once he found the baby girl, he then took her home to the royal palace. He named her Dayang Sumbi.
Time flies, Dayang Sumbi has grown into a beautiful girl. Many of the nobles, kings, and princes want to marry Dayang Sumbi. But the proposal was rejected by all fine by Dayang Sumbi. It turns out that the refusal would lead to a war between the men who proposed to marry her. This makes Dayang Sumbi be sad.
Feeling sad, Dayang Sumbi then asked permission from his father, King Sungging Perbangkara to exile. King Sungging Perbangkara eventually allow Dayang Sumbi exile on a hill. King Perbangkara give a dog named Tumang to accompany Dayang Sumbi.
While in an exile, Dayang Sumbi spare her time by weaving cloth. Once, in the middle of weaving, her weaving equipment fell. On that day, Dayang Sumbi is lazy to pick it up. She then threw the unconscious utterance. "Anyone who is willing to get my weaving equipment, if he was a man, I'll make him as my husband. If she was a woman, I'll make her as my sister."
Tumang, a dog that had accompanied him, downstairs to fetch the weaving equipment and give it to Dayang Sumbi.
Seeing Tumang get her weaving equipment, Dayang Sumbi immediately felt weak and regretting his words. But inevitably she had to keep his promise. Dayang Sumbi then married with Tumang, her dog. But, Tumang was not an ordinary dog. Tumang once is a god who made a mistake, then doomed to be a dog, and banished to earth. Shortly after getting married, Dayang Sumbi gave birth to a boy named Sangkuriang.
The Birth Of Sangkuriang
Time passed, Sangkuriang has now grown into a handsome and strong boy. Since childhood, Sangkuriang have often hunting. Every time he went hunting, Sangkuriang is always accompanied by Tumang. Dayang Sumbi never told him, that Tumang is Sangkuriang's father.
On one day, Sangkuriang is in the middle of hunting in the woods looking for a deer. He accompanied with Tumang. Her mother wants to eat a deer liver. In the middle of the forest, Sangkuriang see a deer was eating. He immediately ordered Tumang to chase the deer. Something strange happening, Tumang which usually docile, this time refused orders from Sangkuriang. Knowing this, Sangkuriang became angry and threatened to kill Tumang if do not want to obey. But Tumang is still refusing to chase the deer. Sangkuriang lost patience and then kill Tumang. He then took the hearts of the poor dog and take it home.
At home, Sangkuriang give Tumang's heart to his mother. Dayang Sumbi then cook and eat the liver. She then asked Sangkuriang about Tumang. Sangkuriang tell her the truth, that liver which is eaten by his mother is Tumang's heart. Knowing this, Dayang Sumbi is incredibly upset. She took a scoop made with a coconut shell, then thwack it on Sangkuriang's head.
Sangkuriang Leaving Home
With injury in his head due to blow by his mother, Sangkuriang then left her mother house. He wandering to the east. He was very angry at his mother. He considers that her mother is more loves Tumang than his own son.
After the departure of Sangkuriang, Dayang Sumbi regret having hit her son's head. She thought this was purely her fault for not telling Sangkuriang that Tumang is his father. She was then imprisoned and asked forgiveness for the wrongs done to the Gods. God knows this and forgives Dayang Sumbi. The gods bestowed lasting beauty on Dayang Sumbi. She became a long-lived but still look beautiful and young.
Sangkuriang Want to Marry Dayang Sumbi
It's been many years that Sangkuriang wandering without clear aim. He wanders just follow wherever his footsteps go. Without realizing it, He turning back to the place where Dayang Sumbi house located.
When Sangkuriang meet with Dayang Sumbi, He fascinated by her beauty. Similarly, Dayang Sumbi fascinated by Sangkuriang strong and beauty. They both have not met for a long time. They do not realize that they actually are mother and son. Sangkuriang and Dayang Sumbi then planned to get married.
Before the wedding, Sangkuriang want to go hunting in the woods. Before hunting, Dayang Sumbi help tie the headband to Sangkuriang's head. That's when Dayang Sumbi see the scar on the head Sangkuriang. Dayang Sumbi very shocked and immediately realized that Sangkuriang was his own son.
Dayang Sumbi then ask Sangkuriang to cancel their wedding. She explained that they were both mother and son. But Sangkuriang do not care about her explanation. He still wants to marry Dayang Sumbi which is very beautiful.
Knowing the desire of Sangkuriang who still wants to marry her, Dayang Sumbi finally agree to marry with him. But she ask a very severe condition. "Well if you really want to marry me. I am willing to be your wife but the condition is very severe."
"What requirements do you ask? Whatever it is I will afford it." Said Sangkuriang.
"All Right. You must dam Citarum river. Then you create a very large boat. All that must be completed in one night." Dayang said Sumbi.
"Well then, I am agree with your conditions. I will finish it in just one night." Sangkuriang immediately worked hard to realize Dayang Sumbi's terms. Sangkuriang cut down a large tree and make a big boat. He stacks branches and twigs that he does not use. Piles of branches and twigs are then transformed into a mountain called Mount Burangrang. Meanwhile stump or tree trunk that he cut later, transformed into a mountain called Mount Bukit Tunggul.
Not long after, a large boat that Dayang Sumbi request was completed. Then he headed to Citarum river to help it become a lake. For this work, he called spirits creatures, that once he defeated, for help. That dams he created called Sanghyang Tikoro.
Knowing Sangkuriang's job are very fast makes Dayang Sumbi be worry. He must thwart Sangkuriang's work so that their married can be cancelled. He then asked for help to the gods to give her a way out from that problem.
Gods then gives Dayang Sumbi a guidance to cast a white cloth woven so quickly. That way the sun will rise faster. Dayang Sumbi immediately take the Gods instructions. Not long after, the Sun rises.
Sunrise makes the spirits creatures who are working, be scattered and leave their job. Sangkuriang furious with this incident. He knew that Dayang Sumbi cheating to makes fast dawn arrives. He was very angry, and then break down the dam Sanghyang Tikoro. He threw the Stoppers of Citarum river towards the east which later transformed into Mount Manglayang. The water in the lake to be receding. Still not satisfied, Sangkuriang then kicked the big boat that he made up thrown and fell face down. That Big boat is then transformed into Mount Tangkuban Perahu.
Sangkuriang's anger still not abated. He ran after Dayang Sumbi. Dayang Sumbi running scared of Sangkuriang. She then ran towards Gunung Putri. Her body was then disappeared and turned into a flower called Jaksi flower. While Sangkuriang continue to run after, finally arrive at a place called Ujung Berung. In this place the body of Sangkuriang disappeared into the supernatural world.
