Folklore for Kids: Prabu Panggung Keraton: The Indonesian Folktale of the Princess's Riddle and the Serpent Spirit

Chapter 1: The Kingdom of Dayeuh Manggung

Long, long ago, in a green and peaceful corner of West Java, there was a small kingdom called Dayeuh Manggung Masanggrahan. It was ruled by a wise and kind-hearted king named Prabu Panggung Keraton. Though his kingdom was small, his people were happy and lived in comfort, for the king cared for them as if they were his own children.

The king had a younger sister whose beauty was known far and wide. Her name was Princess Rarang Purbaratna, and the people of the kingdom loved her so dearly that they often said she looked as lovely as an angel who had come down from the sky.

But even though Princess Rarang had grown into a young woman ready for marriage, she had not yet found anyone to be her husband. This made her brother, the king, feel very worried in his heart.

Chapter 2: The Princess's Riddle

One quiet afternoon, King Panggung Keraton called his sister to his chamber.

Prabu Panggung Keraton: "Dear sister, there is something I have long wished to ask you. You are now of an age to marry, and it is time for you to find a husband. Tell me, is there perhaps a young man you already have in your heart?"

Princess Rarang lowered her eyes and thought for a moment before she answered.

Princess Rarang Purbaratna: "Forgive me, dear brother. I have thought about this for a very long time, but my heart has not yet settled on anyone. I do not mind who becomes my husband — as long as he is able to answer one riddle. Whoever can solve it, I will gladly accept as my life companion."

Prabu Panggung Keraton: "Very well, little sister. What is this riddle of yours? I shall have it announced throughout the whole kingdom, so that everyone may try to answer it."

And so, the princess recited her riddle, a mysterious verse full of hidden meaning:

Bitung heart kale terrace,

Former ducks deep down,
Former swan on the bantar,
Former ant on a rock,
Dried rice leaves,
Comb the little cat horns,
Large comb horse horn,
Kemben lay kasunten,
Embellished with a Ferris wheel,
Write a mega streaked sky,
Its length is about the universe,
Diamonds as big as a pumpkin...

As soon as the king heard the riddle, he sent hundreds of royal messengers galloping across the land — not only through his own kingdom, but to every neighboring kingdom as well — announcing the princess's contest to all who wished to try their luck.

Chapter 3: The Great Contest

News of the beautiful princess and her mysterious riddle spread like wildfire. Before long, the courtyard of the Dayeuh Manggung palace was filled with thousands of young men — and even a few old ones — all eager to win the hand of Princess Rarang Purbaratna.

But one by one, they all failed. Even kings from faraway lands came to try, yet none could unravel the meaning of the riddle.

Among them was a proud and short-tempered ruler named Prabu Gajah Penggala, king of the Kuta Genggelang kingdom. When he too failed to solve the riddle, his anger burned fiercely.

Prabu Gajah Penggala: "How dare this riddle mock me! Mark my words — if that princess ever finds her match, I shall bring my armies to destroy Dayeuh Manggung myself!"

And with that furious vow, he stormed away from the palace.

Chapter 4: The Wandering Prince

Far across the sea, in the kingdom of Pakuan Pajajaran, there lived a handsome and noble young prince named Munding Larik. He was preparing to one day take his father's throne, but first, his father wished for him to travel and gain wisdom and experience of the world.

Before the prince set sail, his father gave him a mysterious map called Nusa Thirty-Three – Bengawan Sewidak Lima, along with two treasured weapons: the Malang One Million Weapon and the Keris Crow Karancang.

The King of Pakuan Pajajaran: "My son, somewhere in a land that resembles this very map, you will find the one destined to be your wife. Travel wisely, and let your heart guide you."

After many days sailing across the wide ocean, a terrible storm struck, and the prince and his loyal Patih were shipwrecked upon an unfamiliar shore. Determined to find their way, the two companions climbed to the top of a high hill to see the land around them.

Prince Munding Larik: "Patih, look! This land... it matches the map my father gave me perfectly!"

The Patih: "Then, Your Highness, destiny itself may have guided us here. Let us seek out the ruler of this land and pay our respects."

Chapter 5: The Prince Solves the Riddle

Following the directions of curious villagers, Prince Munding Larik and his soldiers soon arrived at the palace of Dayeuh Manggung. King Panggung Keraton welcomed them warmly and explained the great contest that was underway — a riddle from his sister, the princess, that no one had yet managed to solve.

The moment Prince Munding Larik laid eyes on Princess Rarang Purbaratna, he was struck by her beauty and grace. Without hesitation, he asked to try his hand at the riddle.

He listened carefully as the verse was read aloud to him, then closed his eyes and thought deeply. After a long, thoughtful silence, he finally spoke.

Prince Munding Larik: "I believe I understand it now, Princess. This riddle speaks of the pursuit of true welfare, which is the very path to true safety. It speaks of true emptiness — meaning the true origin and the true meaning of life. Whoever comes to understand this shall surely find both welfare and safety. And that, Princess, is what is called true perfection."

The great hall fell silent — and then erupted into joyful gasps. Princess Rarang's eyes shone with happiness, for at last, someone had understood the deepest meaning of her riddle.

Princess Rarang Purbaratna: "You have answered truly, Prince Munding Larik. My heart tells me that you are the one I have been waiting for."

Chapter 6: A Royal Wedding — and a Jealous Enemy

True to her word, Princess Rarang Purbaratna accepted Prince Munding Larik as her husband. A grand and joyous wedding was held, and the entire kingdom of Dayeuh Manggung celebrated for days, feasting and dancing in the palace courtyards.

But far away, news of the wedding reached the ears of the bitter Prabu Gajah Penggala, and his old anger flared once more.

Prabu Gajah Penggala: "So, the princess has found her match after all! If I cannot have her, then no one shall enjoy her happiness in peace!"

Consumed by jealousy, he traveled deep into the shadows of Goa Jotang to seek out a fearsome serpent spirit named Jonggrang Kalapitung.

Prabu Gajah Penggala: "Jonggrang Kalapitung, I ask a favor of you. Steal away the princess of Dayeuh Manggung, and bring her to me."

Chapter 7: The Serpent Spirit's Betrayal

That very night, Jonggrang Kalapitung slithered silently into the palace and found Princess Rarang fast asleep in her chamber. It would have been easy to snatch her away — but the moment the serpent spirit saw her gentle, sleeping face, something strange happened. He, too, fell hopelessly in love.

Jonggrang Kalapitung: (whispering to himself) "Such beauty... I cannot hand her over to that wicked king. She shall be mine alone."

And so, instead of delivering the princess to Prabu Gajah Penggala as promised, the serpent spirit hid her away in his own lair.

Chapter 8: The King's Search

When morning came, the palace was thrown into chaos — Princess Rarang was gone! King Panggung Keraton was furious and heartbroken to learn his beloved sister had been kidnapped. Believing Prabu Gajah Penggala to be behind it, he sent his most trusted Patih to confront him.

But the wicked king struck down the Patih without mercy. Filled with grief and rage, King Panggung Keraton made a decision.

Prabu Panggung Keraton: "If no one else can bring my sister home, then I shall go myself — and I will not return without her."

He traveled alone to the kingdom of Kuta Genggelang to face Prabu Gajah Penggala.

Chapter 9: The Battle of Two Kings

The two kings clashed in a fierce and mighty battle, each one skilled and powerful, neither willing to yield. Swords clashed and magic crackled through the air as the fight raged on through the entire afternoon.

At last, as the sun began to set, Prabu Gajah Penggala grew weary, his strength fading. King Panggung Keraton finally overpowered him, standing victorious.

Prabu Gajah Penggala: (gasping) "Enough! Enough — I surrender! Please, spare my life. I will help you bring the princess home, I swear it!"

True to his word, the defeated king led Panggung Keraton to Jonggrang Kalapitung, and together they convinced the serpent spirit to release Princess Rarang Purbaratna. At last, she was brought safely home to Dayeuh Manggung.

Chapter 10: A Second Kidnapping

For a while, peace returned to the kingdom. Princess Rarang was reunited with her husband, and soon she was expecting twins. But Jonggrang Kalapitung's love for her had never truly faded, and one dark night, he crept back into the palace and stole her away once again.

This time, tragedy struck along the journey — the princess gave birth to her twin babies on the road. In his cruelty, Jonggrang Kalapitung transformed Princess Rarang into a great serpent and swallowed her whole, abandoning the newborn twins alone in the middle of the forest.

Chapter 11: The Miraculous Twins

Back at the palace, panic spread once more when it was discovered that the princess had vanished again. King Panggung Keraton rushed out to search the forest himself — and there, to his astonishment, he found the twin babies.

Though newborn, the twins could already run and speak, and the king understood at once that these were no ordinary children.

The Twins: "Uncle King! A great big snake swallowed our mother! Please, you must help us save her!"

Without a moment's hesitation, the king and the twins set off together, chasing after the giant serpent that had taken Princess Rarang.

Chapter 12: The Final Battle

After a long and thrilling chase through the forest, they finally cornered the great serpent. A tremendous battle broke out, and in the end, King Panggung Keraton drove his sacred heirloom keris straight into the heart of Jonggrang Kalapitung, ending the evil spirit's life once and for all.

When they cut open the serpent's body, they found Princess Rarang Purbaratna still alive inside — safe at last.

Princess Rarang Purbaratna: "My brother... my children... you came for me. I knew you would never give up."

Prabu Panggung Keraton: "Never, dear sister. As long as I live, no one will ever take you from us again."

Chapter 13: Happily Ever After

With Jonggrang Kalapitung defeated and Prabu Gajah Penggala's wickedness put to an end, the family returned home to Dayeuh Manggung together. From that day on, Princess Rarang Purbaratna, Prince Munding Larik, and their twin children lived in peace and happiness, free from fear, surrounded by the love of a kingdom that adored them.

And so ends the tale of Prabu Panggung Keraton — a story of love, courage, and the triumph of good over evil.
