Begawan Selapawening, Folk Tales from Yogyakarta

Begawan Selapawening, Folk Tales from Yogyakarta
The following is a folk tale originating from the Yogyakarta area entitled Begawan Selapawening. According to folklore, Begawan Selapawening was the son of the Majapahit king named Brawijaya, he moved away to a place because of the influence of Islam on the island of Java. Because they did not want to accept the influence of Islam, they moved to a place that was not influenced by Islam.

The magnitude or strength of the influence of Islam in the Majapahit region, even to the center of the kingdom, meant that those who did not agree or did not want to give up the beliefs they had adhered to all this time felt pressured. They then stepped aside and looked for a place that was considered safe and free. Likewise with Begawan Selapawening and his followers. Begawan Selapawening and his followers left the Majapahit Kingdom until they arrived on the south coast of Yogyakarta.

Begawan Selapawening was followed by his followers. Arriving in the South Coast area of Yogyakarta, they set up a hermitage. Apart from being a place for them to live, the hermitage is also a place to disseminate the teachings that they have always adhered to. Padepokan was established in Pemancingan Village. It is said to be called the Fishing Village, according to the story, because the village is often used as a place for fishing skill competitions between Sheikh Maulana Maghribi and Begawan Selapawening.

According to the story, once upon a time, Sheikh Maulana Maghribi came to the Begawan Selapawening hermitage with the aim of spreading the teachings of Islam. In order to avoid obstacles in his efforts to spread the teachings of Islam, Sheikh Maulana Maghribi met with the ruler of the region, namely Begawan Selapawening.

At that time, Begawan Selapawening and his followers converted to Buddhism. Syekh Maulana Maghribi frankly hoped that Begawan Selapawening would accept Islamic teachings and give his subordinates the freedom to embrace Islam.

Begawan Selapawening did not approve of Sheikh Maulana Maghribi's wishes. However, if Sheikh Maulana Maghribi can match his supernatural powers, then Begawan Selapawening will give his hermitage to Sheikh Maulana Maghribi to be used as a place to spread Islam. The first magic contest was with delicacy. Begawan Selapawening hid, it turned out that Sheikh Maulana Maghreb managed to find his hiding place. But when Sheikh Maulana Maghribi went into hiding, Begawan Selapawening failed to find him.

The second game is fishing. Begawan Selapawening had the first opportunity to fish. With his fishing skills and magic, Begawan Selapawening was able to catch a very large fish. When on the occasion Sheikh Maulana Maghribi showed his magic and fishing skills, it turned out that he managed to catch a large, cooked fish, ready to eat. The awe of those who witnessed the event was reflected in everyone, including Begawan Selapawening. In this way, Begawan Selapawening realized that Sheikh Maulana Maghribi's supernatural powers exceeded his own. Begawan Selapawening then surrendered, and the power of the hermitage was handed over to Sheikh Maulana Maghribi.

The former Begawan Selapawening hermitage was turned into an Islamic boarding school by Sheikh Maulana Maghribi. This place is to accommodate those who wish to deepen the teachings of the Islamic religion. Apart from deepening Islamic teachings, the Islamic boarding school is also used as a place to deepen religious knowledge.

The hook that was previously used for fishing when competing with Begawan Selapawening, was stuck by Sheikh Maulana Magribi in the back garden of the hermitage which has now become a boarding school. It turns out that the hook shank, which was made from bamboo blades, has now grown into a lush bamboo clump. This bamboo is called sentana bamboo or fishing bamboo. According to belief, sentana bamboo is sacred, it was proven that during the 2nd class it could repel Dutch troops. With the existence of an Islamic boarding school on Sentana Hill, Islam can develop rapidly in the area around the Islamic boarding school.
