The Golden Watermelon (Folklore from West Kalimantan)

The Golden Watermelon (Folklore from West Kalimantan)
The following is a folk tale from West Kalimantan entitled Golden Watermelon. The Golden Watermelon is a folk tale that is full of noble moral values. The message conveyed by this folk tale is very appropriate to remind us not to be stingy in this life. At first, this story tells of two children who are brothers, they are named Muzakir and Dermawan. Muzakir and Dermwan are the children of a rich merchant somewhere. One day, the rich merchant died and divided his fortune between his two children. What is the story of the Golden Watermelon? here's the story.

In the Sambas area, there lived a very rich merchant who owned a lot of land, a luxurious house and valuable possessions. This merchant had two sons named Muzakir and Dermawan. Even though they are brothers, their personalities are very different. Muzakir is known to be stingy and greedy, while Dermawan is kind-hearted and likes to help.

When the merchant fell ill, he called his two children to give him a final message. The father advised them to live in harmony and not be jealous of each other because their inheritance had been divided fairly. A few days later, the merchant died, leaving his two children in sorrow.

After their father died, the inheritance was divided equally. Muzakir, who was stingy, kept all his wealth in a safe and refused to give alms to the poor. On the contrary, Dermawan generously helped those in need, until finally his wealth ran out and he had to sell his house. Dermawan continues his simple life and does not forget to always be grateful to God Almighty.

One day, Dermawan found an injured sparrow in his yard. With great love, he cared for the bird until it recovered. In return, the sparrow brought a seed which Dermawan then planted in his garden. The seed grows into a watermelon tree which produces only one fruit, but it is very large and fragrant. When cut open, the watermelon turned out to be filled with pure gold. Dermawan became rich again, but remained generous and always grateful.

The story of Dermawan's good fortune reached Muzakir, who then felt jealous. He tried to imitate his younger brother's methods by catching and injuring sparrows to get the same wealth. After a few days, the sparrow also gave seeds to Muzakir, which he planted with great anticipation. The seeds grew into a very large watermelon, even bigger than Dermawan's watermelon.

However, when Muzakir cut the watermelon, instead of gold, he was sprayed with smelly black mud and dirt. The mud stained his clothes and house. Muzakir was furious and ran out of the house screaming. People who saw him just laughed at him because they knew that it was revenge for his stinginess and greed.

From this incident, Muzakir learns that wealth obtained in the wrong way will not bring happiness, while Dermawan continues to live happily with a heart full of love and gratitude.
