However, Ki Ageng Mangir has bad qualities, namely being selfish and arrogant. He did not want to submit to Mataram. He considered that Mangir's land was a fief, meaning it was free and independent, and did not have to submit and obey Mataram. Panembahan Senopati as king of Mataram had sent envoys to Mangir several times to persuade Ki Ageng Mangir to come to Mataram. However, Ki Ageng Mangir remained firm, refusing to face and submit to Mataram. In fact, he challenged to war. Ki Ageng Mangir's attitude made Panembahan Senopati angry and felt slighted. Panembahan Senopati ordered the Mataram Kingdom to prepare to fight against Ki Ageng Mangir. However, Ki Juru Mertani, advisor to the Mataram Kingdom, did not agree that Ki Ageng Mangir should be confronted with war, because it would result in many casualties. The advice from Ki Juru Mertani was considered by Panembahan Senopati. Finally, a way was taken to deal with Ki Ageng Mangir by subtle deception. Panembahan Senopati then called his daughter, namely Pembayun's daughter. Panembahan Senopati planned to conquer Ki Ageng Mangir through his daughter. Pembayun was sent to disguise herself as a ledhek, which is a beautiful woman who dances in traditional Javanese clothing, accompanied by Javanese musical pieces. Ledhek usually sings, going from village to village. Princess Pembayun agreed to a request from her father, Panembahan Senopati, to disguise herself as a ledhek. Pembayun was accompanied by her brothers and attendants. Pembayun became a ledhek and her brother became a gamelan musician. They then busk around from village to village.

One day, they arrived at Mangir Village, where Ki Ageng Mangir ruled. Ki Ageng Mangir is a Ledhek fan. Seeing that there was a very beautiful ledhek, Ki Ageng Mangir was interested in enjoying it. The longer he saw The Ledhek, the more Ki Ageng Mangir fell in love with her. Finally, Ki Ageng Mangir asked Pembayun to become his wife. Pembayun was very happy, because her mission to attract Ki Ageng Mangir had been successful. Ki Ageng Mangir finally married Pembayun.

During her wedding, it was discovered that Princess Pembayun was pregnant. Hearing about his wife's pregnancy, Ki Ageng Mangir was very happy, because soon he would have children from a wife he loved very much. However, Pembayun still felt there was a problem, because all this time she had been keeping something from her husband. Finally, Pembayun had the courage to be honest with Ki Ageng Mangir about who he was. Hearing Pembayun's confession, Ki Ageng Mangir was very angry, because he had been deceived. Unbeknownst to him, he has become the son-in-law of his mortal enemy, namely Panembahan Senopati. However, Pembayun patiently tried to suppress Ki Ageng Mangir's feelings of resentment towards her father, Panembahan Senopati. Pembayun convinced Ki Ageng Mangir that he truly loved Ki Ageng Mangir. Pembayun patiently persuaded Ki Ageng Mangir to face his father-in-law, Panembahan Senopati.

Pembayun's efforts to persuade Ki Ageng Mangir were finally successful. For the sake of his love for his wife and the baby Pembayun was carrying, Ki Ageng Mangir wanted to comply with his wife's request to go to Panembahan Senopati to Mataram. Ki Ageng Mangir's arrival was welcomed by making tarub (tent). However, the tarub is made short, only enough for standing. Tarub was made in such a way with the intention that Ki Ageng Mangir's weapon, namely the Baru Klinthing spear, would not be brought in. When Ki Ageng Mangir arrived in Mataram with Pembayun, they immediately went to Panembahan Senopati. Spear Baru Klinthing was left outside the tarub. As soon as he met Panembahan Senopati, Ki Ageng Mangir immediately offered his in-laws prostration. When Ki Ageng Mangir sungkem, Panembahan Senopati hit Ki Ageng Mangir's head against the rock where he was sitting called Watu Gilang. Ki Ageng Mangir's head was crushed and he died instantly. Seeing her husband dead, Pembayun cried uncontrollably, because she loved her husband very much. Ki Ageng Mangir's body was buried in the grave of a relative in Mataram, Kotagede. After all, Ki Ageng Mangir is both son-in-law and enemy. To commemorate Ki Ageng Mangir, the place where Ki Ageng Mangir lives is called Mangir Village, which is located in Pajangan District, Bantul Regency.
