Gubuk Rubuh Legend Indonesian Folktale from Yogyakarta

Chapter 1: Trouble in the Palace

Long, long ago, the great Majapahit Kingdom was ruled by King Brawijaya V. One day, a big quarrel broke out inside the palace, and the whole court was troubled.

After much thinking, the king made a hard decision. He would send away one of his wives, Princess Campa, a gift to him from the faraway Kingdom of China. Princess Campa was expecting a baby, the king's own child.

King Brawijaya V: "Princess Campa, I am sorry. For the peace of the palace, you must leave."

Princess Campa: "I understand, Your Majesty. I will go, and I will take good care of our little one."

Chapter 2: Two Little Brothers

A few months later, Princess Campa gave birth to a healthy baby boy. She named him Raden Patah.

Some time later, Princess Campa married a kind man named Arya Damar. They too were blessed with a baby boy, and they named him Raden Kusen.

So Raden Patah and Raden Kusen grew up together as brothers. They had the same mother but different fathers, and they loved each other dearly.

Chapter 3: Learning from Sunan Ampel

When the two boys had grown into fine young men, they set off for Surabaya to study with a wise teacher named Sunan Ampel.

Raden Patah: "Kusen, let us learn as much as we can from Sunan Ampel."

Raden Kusen: "Yes, Brother! Let us study hard and make Mother proud."

They studied patiently and learned many good things.

Chapter 4: A Young Man in Disguise

After finishing their studies, Raden Kusen traveled to Majapahit. He did not tell anyone who he really was. Instead, he wore a simple disguise and asked to work in the palace as a servant.

Raden Kusen worked hard and honestly. He was clever and skilled, and everyone in the palace grew fond of him. Soon the king trusted him so much that he made him the Duke of Terung, a high and honored position in Majapahit.

Meanwhile, Raden Patah went to a different place in Central Java. There he opened an Islamic boarding school, which he named Glagahwangi.

Chapter 5: The Secret Is Revealed

One day, Raden Kusen had an idea. He invited his brother to meet the king.

Raden Kusen: "Brother, it is time we told the king the truth. Will you come with me to the palace?"

Raden Patah: "I will, Kusen. Let us go together."

When they stood before King Brawijaya V, the brothers bowed low.

Raden Kusen: "Your Majesty, this is Raden Patah. He is the son of Princess Campa and Your Majesty. And I am the son of Princess Campa and Arya Damar. That makes me your grandson through Arya Damar."

King Brawijaya V: "What? Is this really true? I find it hard to believe!"

Raden Patah: "It is true, Father. We are telling you the honest truth."

The brothers explained everything patiently, again and again. At last, King Brawijaya V believed them, and his heart was glad.

Chapter 6: Glagahwangi Becomes Demak

The king was so pleased that he appointed Raden Patah as the regent of Glagahwangi.

King Brawijaya V: "Raden Patah, I trust you to lead this land wisely."

Raden Patah: "Thank you, Father. I will do my best."

Not long after, Glagahwangi changed its name to Demak. Under Raden Patah's leadership, Demak grew quickly. Its busy port welcomed traders from far and wide, especially Muslim traders. Soon Demak became a bustling and prosperous city, and even the Semarang region came under Raden Patah's care.

Chapter 7: A Wish and a Farewell

Raden Patah had a great wish. He hoped that his father, King Brawijaya V, and the people of Majapahit would embrace Islam. He wanted to march to Majapahit, but his teacher stopped him.

Sunan Ampel: "Raden Patah, do not go. It is not the right time."

Raden Patah listened to his teacher. But when Sunan Ampel passed away, the old wish returned to Raden Patah's heart.

Chapter 8: The King Runs Away

At last, Raden Patah marched to Majapahit and won the kingdom. Many of its people embraced Islam. King Brawijaya V, however, did not wish to change his faith, even though his own son asked him kindly.

Raden Patah: "Father, please, come and join us."

King Brawijaya V: "No, my son. I cannot."

So the king and his followers left Majapahit and traveled far away, all the way to Gunung Kidul. Tired and hungry, they came upon a little hut and stopped to rest.

Follower: "Your Majesty, let us rest here for a while."

But Raden Patah's soldiers had followed them and surrounded the place. King Brawijaya V still refused to change his faith, and he slipped away safely.

Chapter 9: The Hut That Fell

While the king's followers were being taught about Islam by Raden Patah, King Brawijaya V journeyed on to the south of Gunung Kidul. There he stopped his journey and passed away.

The people who lived nearby remembered the little hut where the king's followers had learned and prayed. They named the place Gubuk Rubuh.

Gubuk means a hut or a small house. Rubuh means to fall down, like a person who bows low to the ground in prayer.

Even today, there is a little hamlet in Gunung Kidul called Gubug Rubuh. And that is how the folktale of Gubuk Rubuh, from Yogyakarta, came to be told.
