The legend of Batu Kuyung is a Folklore from Bengkulu. A legend tells the life of a family in the village of Tanjung Meranti, Bengkulu Province. The family consists of a husband and wife with two children. Their eldest son was named Dimun. While the youngest is a daughter named Meterei.
Both parents of Dimun & Meterei are so busy working that they have no time to educate their children. They make a living by farming, fishing, and making handicrafts such as bubu, baronang, and baskets for them to sell in the market. Because of their busy lives, as a result, Dimun & Meterei grew up to become poorly tempered children. Both of their children often say harsh words, mock others, and are very naughty.
Dimun And Meterei Whining Ask For Food
One day, a married couple was busy working on making various handicrafts for sale to the market. Because they were so busy, they didn't have time to cook food for their children. Soon their two children began to feel hungry. They are whining for food. But both of their parents did not appear to care about their whining. Feeling upset not being cared for, both of them then damaged the craft items made by their parents. They kicked, slammed the trap, the baronang while shouting. Meterei even cried because he was very hungry.
Both their parents are very upset to see the behavior of their children. They took the things that their children damaged and then they repaired.
"Mother, give us food! We haven't eaten from morning! " they said to his mother.
"Ask your father there for food!" his mother replied curtly.
"Father, give us food! We are already very hungry! " they said to his father.
"Dad is busy! Go there and ask your mother for food! " his father snapped.
Dimun & Meterei returned to her mother whining for food. Again his mother told them to ask their father for food. Vice versa. Feeling angry, the two children finally went to the garden behind the house. Then they sat on a big rock. The stone they named Batu Kuyung. To get rid of hunger, both of them sang a sad song. In their singing, they asked Batu Kuyung to take them flying high away from their parents.
Batu Kuyung Increased Height
Miraculously, after stopping singing the song, the Kuyung Stone suddenly grew taller. Dimun & Meterei were surprised to see the incident. They then chanted again, asking Batu Kuyung to take them flying high. After stopping to sing, the Kuyung Stone grew taller and so on. The two bad boys felt very happy because Batu Kuyung had been taller than all the trees in Tanjung Meranti village. They are very happy because they can see a very wide area from a height. Their hunger slowly disappeared. They both kept singing because they wanted to go to a higher place.
Meanwhile their parents have finished working. They have also finished cooking food for the children. They realized that Dimun & Meterei were not in the house. They call their children to go home and eat. "Dimun! Meterei! Where are you? Let's go home, let's eat together. " their mother said. But there is no answer from their two children.
They then immediately went out to look for their child. How surprised they found that the Kuyung Stone in the garden had turned very high. Faintly they heard the sound of their two children on the Stone Kuyung. "Dimun! Meterei! Come down Let's go home, let's eat together! " both of them shouted asking their children to come down. They both feel very worried. They regret having wasted their child.
Batu Kuyung Collapsed
Dimun & Meterei's father then took an ax in the house then tried to cut down the Kuyung Stone but failed.
But Dimun & Meterei did not pay attention to the calls of his parents. They continued to sing nonstop. As a result, Batu Kuyung continues to grow taller. Until finally the Kuyung Stone reaches the sky. As soon as they touch the sky, Dimun & Meterei disappear without a trace. After the two children disappeared, the Kuyung Stone collapsed causing a very loud noise. The high Kuyung stone collapsed on Dimun & Meterei's house until it was destroyed. Both of their parents were crushed by the Kuyung Stone until both of them died instantly.
