The Origin of Pagar Dewa

Once upon a time, long ago in Bengkulu Province, there was a lake. Bengkulu people at that time called it by the name of a lake of Gods, because they believed that the lake was a place to cleanse the gods of heaven during the full moon. People do not dare to approach the lake of God because they believe that the lake of God is a sacred place.
The Origin of Pagar Dewa

In a village there is an old bachelor who hopes to get married quickly. The old bachelor did not believe the public opinion that the lake of Gods is a place where the gods cleanse themselves. There was an intention from the old bachelor to prove the public's perception of the lake of God. He intends to go to the lake of God at the time of the full moon later.

The moment of full moon arrived, the old bachelor immediately rushed to the lake of God with curiosity. Initially he did not see strange things in the lake of Gods. But after all this time waiting, finally 7 beautiful goddesses came to the lake. The eyes of the old bachelor widened in amazement at the beauty of the seven heavenly angels. The seven angels then bathed in the lake, while the old bachelor watched them from the bushes of trees. After bathing, the seven angels then returned to heaven.

After the angels died, the bachelor thought hard about how he could marry one of the seven angels. Finally he got the idea to make a fence around the lake Dewa. He hopes that when bathing later, the angels will hang their scarves on the fence that he made. Thus, the bachelor can steal it. Patiently the old Bachelors waited for the night of the next full moon.

The full moon comes the next month. The bachelor immediately went to the lake of God and hid in the bushes. As usual, the angels descended from heaven to clean themselves in the lake of Dewa. When bathing, there is a god who keeps his shawl in the fence. When the gods let their guard down, the bachelor then quietly stole a scarf from one of the gods.

The Bachelor Stole the Shawl

After bathing, the gods immediately put their clothes and scarves back on. But one of the gods, the youngest god, did not find his scarf. As a result he could not fly back to heaven. The youngest god left by his brothers to heaven. Feeling very sad that I could not return to heaven, the youngest god then went missing somewhere. Until now, no one knows where the Gods went.
