Chapter 1: The Kingdom of Serut
Once upon a time, long, long ago, there was a peaceful kingdom in the land we now call Bengkulu Province. It was called the Kingdom of Serut, and it was ruled by a kind king named Ratu Agung.
One sad day, Ratu Agung passed away. The people of Serut cried, for they loved their king very much. Soon after, the eldest son took the throne.
Pangeran Anak Dalam: "Father taught me to be fair and wise. I promise to take good care of our kingdom and every one of its people."
And he kept his promise. Under his rule, the Kingdom of Serut grew happy and prosperous. Merchants came from far and wide to trade in its busy markets, and everyone lived in peace.
Chapter 2: The Proposal from Aceh
As the years passed, Putri Gading Cempaka grew into a beautiful young woman. She was as graceful as a flower in bloom, and her kind heart shone even brighter than her beauty. Many princes and wealthy merchants wished to marry her.
The news of her beauty traveled across the sea, all the way to the Kingdom of Aceh. A prince there was so charmed that he sent a messenger to the Kingdom of Serut.
Messenger of Aceh: "Your Majesty, I bring greetings from the Prince of Aceh. He wishes to ask for the hand of Putri Gading Cempaka."
King Anak Dalam listened carefully. He thought about his sister's happiness and about what was best for her.
King Anak Dalam: "Please thank your prince for his kind words. But I must politely decline. My sister is not ready to marry."
The messenger bowed and returned home with the answer. The king had spoken gently and respectfully, but the Prince of Aceh did not take it kindly.
Chapter 3: The Angry Prince
When the Prince of Aceh heard the news, his face turned red with fury.
Prince of Aceh: "What? He dares to refuse me? I will not let this insult go unanswered!"
He stormed to his royal court and demanded that the army prepare for war.
Prince of Aceh: "Gather the soldiers! Ready the warships! We will sail to Serut at once!"
Soon, a great fleet of warships set sail across the waves, carrying a mighty army toward the Kingdom of Serut.
Chapter 4: The Clever Plan
News of the coming attack reached King Anak Dalam. His advisors rushed into the palace, trembling with worry.
Advisor: "Your Majesty, the Acehnese army is coming with a huge fleet! They are very strong and very hard to defeat!"
The king stayed calm and thought hard. Then his eyes lit up.
King Anak Dalam: "I have an idea! Their ships must travel up the river to reach us. Let us cut down trees and send the logs floating down the river. The logs will block their way!"Advisor: "What a clever plan, Your Majesty!"
The king called his soldiers together.
King Anak Dalam: "Brave soldiers, take your axes and chop down the trees along the riverbank. Roll the logs into the water! The rest of you, stay on guard and be ready to defend our kingdom!"
Chop! Chop! Chop! The soldiers worked as hard as they could. Tree after tree came crashing down, and log after log splashed into the river. Soon, countless logs were drifting downstream.
Chapter 5: The River Full of Logs
Meanwhile, the Acehnese ships sailed bravely up the river. But what was that ahead? Log after log came floating toward them from upstream, bumping and knocking against the ships!
Acehnese Soldier: "Look out! There are tree trunks everywhere! We cannot move forward!"
The sailors pushed and pulled and steered this way and that, trying to dodge the heavy logs. The ships rocked and wobbled. Everyone shouted at once.
Acehnese Soldiers: "Empang ka hulu! Empang ka hulu!"
(Their words meant that the river was blocked upstream.)
After a great deal of hard work, the Acehnese finally got their ships through and landed on a hillside. The soldiers jumped onto the shore, but the Serut troops were already waiting for them!
Chapter 6: The Great Battle
Clang! Clash! A great battle began between the two armies. The Acehnese soldiers were strong, but King Anak Dalam's clever planning had made the Serut army just as strong.
The fighting went on and on. Neither side could win, and neither side would give up. Many brave soldiers were hurt on both sides.
King Anak Dalam watched from afar, and his heart grew heavy.
King Anak Dalam: "Oh, how sad this is. So many people are suffering, and for what? I cannot bear to watch any longer."
He gathered his six younger siblings, his family, and his most loyal followers.
King Anak Dalam: "Come with me. We will go to Mount Bungkuk and stay there until this war is over."
And so they climbed the mountain, hoping for peace to come.
Chapter 7: Peace at Last
Down below, the war went on for a long time. But since neither army could win, the soldiers grew tired of fighting. At last, both sides laid down their weapons and agreed to make peace.
The war was over! Even so, King Anak Dalam, his six siblings, and his faithful followers decided to stay on Mount Bungkuk and make their new home there.
Chapter 8: How Bengkulu Got Its Name
After that great war, the people of the Kingdom of Serut never forgot the shouts of the Acehnese soldiers: "Empang ka hulu!"
Over many years, people said those words so often that they slowly changed. Empang ka hulu became Pangkahulu. Then Pangkahulu became Bangkahulu. And finally, with time, it became the name we know today: Bengkulu.
And that is how the Kingdom of Serut came to be known as Bengkulu.
