The Origins of the City of Banyuwangi

Once upon a time, long ago in the eastern tip of East Java there was a large kingdom. The kingdom was ruled by a just and wise king. The King has a dashing son named Raden Banterang. Raden Banterang's hobby is hunting in the forest.
The Origins of the City of Banyuwangi

One morning, Raden Banterang was about to go hunting in the forest. He ordered his servants to prepare the equipment. "I want to go hunting in the forest. You guys quickly prepare the hunting gear for me. " Raden Banterang said to his aides. His aides immediately set up hunting gear for Raden Banterang. Soon hunting equipment was ready. Then Raden Banterang accompanied by some of his escorts left for the forest.

In the middle of the forest they walked together looking for game animals. Suddenly Raden Banterang saw a deer passing in front of him. He immediately chased the deer alone. The Kijang immediately ran into the forest. Finally Raden Banterang chased the deer into the forest. He was far from his bodyguards.

Raden Banterang Meets Surati

Deep in the forest, Raden Banterang lost track of the gazelle, the hunted animal. "Where was the deer? Run quickly the deer. I will search until I get it. " said Raden Banterang. He then broke through the thickets of forest trees. However, the deer was not found. Finally he arrived at a very clear river of water. "The water is very clear and fresh." Raden Banterang drank the river water, until his thirst was lost. Then He left the river. But just a few steps walking, he was suddenly shocked by the presence of a beautiful beautiful girl.

"Who are you? Why is there a woman in the middle of the forest? Are you human? " Raden Banterang asked the girl.

"Yes, I'm a human, not a forest watchman ghost. My name is Surati from the Klungkung Kingdom. My father died in the war defending the royal crown. I myself am trying to save myself from enemy attacks into the forest. Sorry who are you?" said the girl, smiling.

Raden Banterang was surprised to hear the beautiful girl's speech. After introducing himself, Raden Banterang immediately helped and invited him to return to the palace. Long story short, the two of them turned out to be married then married to build a happy family in the palace.

Surati Meets Rupaksa

One day, Surati was walking alone outside the palace. Suddenly a man in tattered clothes approached him. "Surati ... Surati ... I'm your sister!" the man shouted.

Surati then looked closely at the man's face. He finally realized that in front of him was his biological brother named Rupaksa. His sister said that the purpose of his arrival was to invite his sister to take revenge, because Raden Banterang was the person who had killed their father. "Surati ... listen carefully. Your husband, Raden Banterang is our father's killer. You have to help me to kill him. " said Rupaksa.

"I'm sorry Rupaksa. I cannot kill my own husband. I am indebted to my husband. " said Surati. Surati told me that she wanted to become Raden Banterang's wife because she was indebted. That way, Surati did not want to help his biological brother's invitation. Rupaksa was angry at his sister's answer, however, he did not force Surati. Then he gave Surati an object in the form of a headband. "Take this headband. You keep it under your bed. " Rupaksa message.

Rupaksa Meets Raden Banterang

Not long after meeting Surati, Rupaksa then went to the forest to look for Raden Banterang. Surati's meeting with her biological brother, Rupaksa, was unknown to Raden Banterang. At that time Raden Banterang was hunting in the forest. When Raden Banterang was in the middle of the forest, he was suddenly surprised by the arrival of a man in tattered clothes. "Sorry, my lord ... Raden Banterang. Sir's safety is threatened. Your wife, Surati, is planning a murder on you. If you do not believe, try to check under the pillow Surati there must be a headband. The headband belongs to the man who was asked to help to kill the Lord. " said Rupaksa. After saying those words, Rupaksa then went missing.

Raden Banterang was very surprised by the appearance of the mysterious man. He immediately returned to the palace. After arriving at the palace, Raden Banterang headed for his wife's marriage. It so happened that his wife Surati was in his party. He spoke of the headband that had been told by a tattered man in the jungle. "Ah ... it turns out that the man's words are true! This headband is proof! You apparently planned to kill me by asking the owner of this headband for help! Is that how you reply to me? " Raden Banterang shouted angrily.

"Do not just accuse Kakanda. AdiYou don't mean to kill Kakanda at all, let alone ask a man for help! " answered Surati. But Raden Banterang did not believe in his wife's answer. Before his life was threatened, Raden Banterang first wanted to harm his wife. He intends to drown his wife in a river.

The Origins of the City of Banyuwangi

Upon arrival at the river, Raden Banterang told of a meeting with a tattered man while hunting in the forest. Likewise Surati, she told of a meeting with a man in tattered clothes as described by her husband. "The man in tattered clothes is Rupaksa, Adinda's biological brother. He is the giver of a headband to Adinda. Please believe me. Adinda has no intention of killing Kakanda. Rupaksa trapped us. Apparently, it was those who wanted to kill Kakanda. Surati explained again, so that Raden Banterang melted his heart.

Although it has been explained by Surati, but Raden Banterang still does not believe what his wife said. He still felt confident that his wife would kill him.

Finally Surati said, "Alright Sisanda. Listen! Adinda will jump into the river. If after Adinda jumps, the river water turns to a clear, fragrant odor, it means that Adinda is innocent! However, if it remains turbid and stinks, it means that Adinda is guilty! ” cried Surati. Raden Banterang did not care but instead drew a dagger to the body of Surati. Surati dodged then quickly jumped into the middle of the river then disappeared.

Shortly after Surati jumped into the river, a miracle occurred. A sweet smell came from the river. Finally Raden Banterang realized that his wife had no intention of killing him. "I was wrong! My wife has no intention of harming me! River water smells good! I am so sorry." Raden Banterang lamenting the death of his wife. He regretted his stupidity. But it was too late, rice had become porridge.

Since that incident, the river has become fragrant. In Javanese it is called banyu fragrance. Banyu means water while fragrant means fragrant. Banyu Wangi River then became the origin of the city of Banyuwangi.

This is a folklore from East Java region about the origin of the city of Banyuwangi.
