The Legend of Baturaden: A Love Story of Suta and the Duke's Daughter

The Legend of Baturaden A Love Story of Suta and the Duke's Daughter

Chapter 1: Suta, the Kind Stable Boy

Long, long ago, in a land that is now called Banyumas in Central Java, there was a grand palace called the Duchy of Kutaliman. It was ruled by a wise and powerful ruler known as Duke Kutaliman.

The Duke had a young servant named Suta. Every day, Suta brushed the Duke's horses, gave them fresh grass, and swept the stable until it sparkled. Suta was honest and hardworking, and he was also very handsome. Everyone in the palace liked him, because he never made trouble for anyone.

When his work was done, Suta loved to stroll around the palace grounds. The grounds were so big that he could visit a new place every day.

Suta: "What a lovely afternoon! I wonder what I will discover today."

Chapter 2: The Giant Snake

One afternoon, Suta was walking past a tall mango tree when he heard a loud cry.

Princess: "Help! Somebody, please help me!"

Suta looked around and gasped. Behind a mahogany tree, a huge snake had wrapped its body around a young woman. She was pale and trembling with fear.

Suta: "Hold on! I am coming!"

Suta did not stop to think about how dangerous it was. He pulled out his sword and rushed toward the snake. Suta was not a great swordsman, but his heart was full of courage. He wanted to save the helpless woman, whoever she might be. After a long and scary struggle, Suta defeated the giant snake at last.

The woman fainted. Suta carried her carefully to a nearby pavilion, and her nurse came running to look after her.

When Suta saw her face, his eyes grew wide.

Suta: "Oh my! She is the Duke's daughter!"

Suta had lived in the palace for a long time, but this was the very first time he had seen the princess up close. Everyone said she was the most beautiful girl in the land, and it was true.

Chapter 3: A Friendship Blossoms

When the princess woke up, her nurse was sitting beside her.

Nurse: "Princess, you are safe now. Suta, the stable boy, saved you from the giant snake."

The princess turned and smiled warmly at Suta.

Princess: "Thank you, Suta. You are so brave. I will never forget what you did for me."

Suta: "It was nothing, Princess. I am just glad that you are safe."

Their eyes met, and something warm and lovely began to grow in both of their hearts. From that day on, Suta and the princess became close friends. They often met, talked, and laughed together.

The Duke knew about their friendship. Since they were only friends, he did not mind.

Chapter 4: The Duke's Anger

As time passed, Suta's feelings grew deeper and deeper. One day, he gathered all his courage and went to the Duke.

Suta: "Your Excellency, I love your daughter with all my heart. Please, may I ask for her hand in marriage?"

The Duke's face turned red with anger.

Duke: "What? How dare you! You are only a stable boy, and she is a noble princess! You are not at all equal to her!"

Suta: "Forgive me, Your Excellency. I only spoke from my heart."

Duke: "Guards! Take this boy away and lock him in the dungeon underground. And give him no food!"

The guards dragged Suta away to the dark, cold dungeon. When the princess heard the terrible news, she cried and cried.

Princess: "It is not fair! Suta has done nothing wrong. He saved my life, and this is how he is treated? I cannot let him suffer."

Chapter 5: The Secret Plan

The princess sat quietly and thought very hard. At last, she made up her mind. She called her most trusted maid and whispered to her.

Princess: "Tonight, please take some food to the guards at the dungeon. Be very quiet and do not let anyone find out."

Maid: "Yes, Princess. I will do it."

That night, the maid carried a tray of tasty food to the guards. The guards knew her well, so they were not suspicious at all. They ate until their tummies were full, and soon they were snoring loudly.

The maid tiptoed into the dungeon and set Suta free. He was weak and tired from hunger, but he was very happy. She led him to the edge of the palace, where the princess was waiting. She had changed into simple village clothes so that nobody would recognize her.

Princess: "Suta! Are you all right?"

Suta: "I am, now that I see you, Princess. But what shall we do?"

Princess: "We will leave this palace and live together, far away from here."

Chapter 6: The Journey to Mount Slamet

Suta and the princess climbed onto a horse. The night was dark and quiet, and the stars twinkled above them. They rode on and on, toward the slopes of Mount Slamet. Nobody saw them, and nobody knew who they were.

At last, they came to a beautiful place beside a clear, sparkling river. The air was cool and fresh, and green trees surrounded them.

Princess: "Look, Suta! What a peaceful place. The air is so cool, and the river sings so sweetly."

Suta: "It is wonderful, Princess. Shall we stay here?"

Princess: "Yes, let us build our home here."

Chapter 7: The Birth of Baturaden

And so, Suta and the princess were married beside the river. They built a little house and lived together happily, with the river, the trees, and the mountain as their neighbors.

As the years went by, people began to call the place Baturaden. The name comes from two words: batur, which means servant, and raden, which means nobleman. It reminds us of the love between a humble servant and a noble princess.

Today, Baturaden is a famous place to visit. It lies north of Purwokerto, on the slopes of Mount Slamet in Banyumas, Central Java.

Moral of the story: True love does not look at wealth or rank. Kindness, courage, and honesty are the things that matter most.
