The Origin of Mount Merapi

According to folklore from Central Java, long ago the island of Java was not yet inhabited by humans. At that time, the island of Java was still in the form of wilderness inhabited by wild animals and supernatural beings. Only a few parts of the island of Java are inhabited by humans in groups and move around because of their unfriendly natural conditions. Human inhabitants of the island of Java who are still few in number do not know that the condition of the island of Java at that time tilted to the south.
The Origin of Mount Merapi

Leaning Java Island

The slope of Java began to worry the gods in heaven. They worried that the whole island of Java would sink into the southern sea. Not only humans will drown, but also wild animals. The gods finally negotiated to find a solution to this problem. After a long time of negotiations, finally the gods agreed to use Mount Jamurdwipa as the ballast of the island of Java. The gods plan to move Mount Jamurdwipa to the middle of the island of Java so that the soil conditions become balanced.

The gods then told the magical creatures of the inhabitants of Mount Jamurdwipa to move, because Mount Jamurdwipa would be appointed and moved to Java. Likewise with the central part of the island of Java, the gods sent Dewa Panyarik and Batara Narada to tell the residents of the place to move.

Mpu Permadi and Mpu Rama Refuse to Move

In the middle of the island of Java, which is in the form of a jungle, there are only two master craftsmen from the kris named Mpu Permadi and Mpu Rama. Both of them were making a keris. When Dewa Panyarik and Batara Narada met Mpu Permadi and Mpu Rama, the two envoys of the gods were amazed by their expertise in making the kris of the two masters. They mixed various types of metals using their bare hands, twisted them and forged them into lumps without the aid of any tools. Amazingly, the two masters' hands were not burning at all in flames.

When the messenger of the gods told the two masters to move immediately, the two masters refused. They reasoned that the making of the kris must be done to completion, if not then the safety of humankind will be threatened. Dewa Panyarik explained that the condition of the island of Java had tilted so that the location had to be immediately emptied to plant Mount Jamurdwipa as a counterweight. But Mpu Permadi and Mpu Rama still refused the requests of the gods.

After all this time of fighting, fighting was inevitable. Dewa Panyarik and Batara Narada attacked the two masters, assisted by the heavenly soldiers. Mpu Permadi and Mpu Rama resisted by using all their powers. This battle lasted a long time and dragged on considering the power of Mpu Permadi and Mpu Rama were able to balance the powers of the messenger of the gods.

The Origin of Mount Merapi

While in heaven, Batara Guru was upset with this situation. If allowed to drag on, the island of Java will sink to the southern sea. Finally Batara Guru ordered Dewa Bayu to move Mount Jamurdwipa to the middle of the island of Java without regard to the safety of Mpu Permadi and Mpu Rama.

Dewa Bayu went south. With his magic, Dewa Bayu blew Mount Jamurdwipa to fly hovering in the sky and fell right in the middle of the island of Java. Mpu Permadi and Mpu Rama died instantly when they were hit by Mount Jamurdwipa. Because they have dared to oppose the gods to move from that place, the spirit of Mpu Permadi and the spirit of Mpu Rama were not accepted in the afterlife. Be the two masters become watchman Mountain. This is the origin of Mount Merapi.

Even though they have died, the supernatural powers of the two masters are still there. The keris that is being worked on by both of them still emits a flame. The embers cannot be extinguished except by the two masters. Over time the embers continued to swell and burn the rocks and soil of Mount Merapi to make a big hole. Until now the hole has become the crater of Mount Merapi.

Mount Merapi, located in the middle of the island of Java, Central Java Province, was originally Mount Jamurdwipa, a high mountain that rises and lies in the southern sea of Java.
