In ancient times, stood a village named Kawar. The area has fertile soil. Because they have fertile land, most of the population's livelihood is farming.
At one time, the village experienced multiple harvests. The residents rejoice to receive the bountiful harvest. In fact, the rice barns are not able to accommodate the abundant crops. They finally held a salvation to be grateful for the abundant harvest.
Traditional ceremonies to be grateful for the abundant harvest were carried out very festively. They wear clothes appropriate to carry out the ceremony. Women do not forget to cook enough food for a thanksgiving feast, so that they can eat delicious food from the harvest. Do not forget the music of guro-guro drums also enlivened the party. They rejoice to enjoy a very lively party.
However, in one house, there lived an old grandmother who had been paralyzed. The grandmother could not enjoy the harvest festival because she was completely paralyzed. Her body could not be moved, she could only sleep on the bed. However, the grandmother's son, grandchildren, and daughter-in-law joined the party. Even though the grandmother really hopes to participate in the big harvest party.
"Oh my God, I really want to join the big harvest feast. But whatever my power, I can't even bring my body there,” muttered the grandmother with tears in her eyes.
Not a single person invited their grandmother to attend the big harvest party. Let alone inviting her to attend the harvest feast, no one wants to talk to her. In fact, the grandmother was very lonely. She needs entertainment and people who are willing to accompany her conversations in her spare time.
Faintly heard the guro-guro drum that took her to the past. Where this musical instrument is very beautiful to listen to and used by young people to party. Young people pair up while dancing. The grandmother remembers her past. But memories are only memories, now the grandmother is struggling in pain. She had to fight her pain and loneliness. Her current feelings are very sad because she has been forgotten by her own son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren.
Until finally the event arrived to enjoy a meal. They cook delicious food. Many kinds of side dishes are served with warm rice, vegetables, and fresh fruits. Warm rice, chicken, beef, pork and various types of fish were served. They eat it with gusto. Occasionally the jokes of some people there make them laugh amidst the cool breeze. They had forgotten that there was an old paralyzed grandmother who wanted to attend the party.
The old grandmother felt hungry, because there was no rice delivered by her son. The grandmother had not eaten food since morning. Her son and her daughter-in-law is just busy taking care of the harvest festival. They seemed to have forgotten their old mother.
"Oh my God, my stomach hurts because of hunger ... have my children forgotten about me, so that they don't deliver food to me at all?” Whispered the grandmother.
With a weak and shaking body, the grandmother finally tried to move out of bed. She then tried to go to the kitchen of the house, hoping to find something to eat. The grandmother desperately searched for the food in the kitchen, even though with very little effort. However, how unfortunate the grandmother was. Her son and her daughter-in-law did not spare any food. They deliberately did not cook food because they intended to join the big harvest party and eat delicious food there.
"They did not provide food for me ... how could they ... They ate deliciously at the harvest feast, but forgot about their parents who were so old to starvation," said the grandmother.
While wiping the tears that kept flowing and bringing back her weak body, the grandmother returned to her bed. There was a sense of sadness and disappointment that he felt. The grandmother continued to cry. She always wept over her unfortunate fate.
At the harvest festival venue, the residents rejoice with full stomachs after eating delicious food. The son of the grandmother finally realized and remembered his poor mother. The son then asked his wife if she had delivered food for the mother.
"My wife, have you delivered food for my mother?" asked the husband to his wife.
"Not yet, my husband," said the wife.
The husband was surprised, then ordered his wife to bring food home. The food is for the grandmother.
"Take this food home, then give it to the my mother," ordered the child to his wife, wrapping the food from cooking during the harvest feast.
His wife then ordered her son to deliver the food.
"Please take this food to your grandmother!" orders the mother to her child.
The grandson finally went to his house. After arriving home, the grandson gave a packet of food to his grandmother. How happy the grandmother is, because her son still remembers his mother.
However, what a surprise the grandmother was. After he opened the package, it turned out that it was only food scraps. The rest of the food consists of bones that have run out of meat and leftover rice is eaten. The grandmother was furious with what her son did.
Actually, the leftover rice that was given to the grandmother was due to his grandchild's act. The grandson ate the packaged rice while on the way to the grandmother's house, then gave it to the grandmother after arriving home.
That is the result of parents not teaching how to respect their children to their grandmothers. So, the rice wrapped for the grandmother was devoured.
With the hunger that gripped the grandmother and feelings of annoyance mixed with anger, her tears could no longer be contained. The grandmother, who was annoyed and felt very hungry, finally cursed her son and daughter-in-law.
"Oh God, my son and my daughter-in-law have disobeyed me. Give them a curse. I am not strong enough to endure the suffering caused by them ...," prayed the grandmother to God Almighty.
In an instant, Kawar Village was hit by a very powerful earthquake. The residents, who were enjoying the harvest festival at that time, suddenly panicked. They can't save themselves. The wind was blowing hard. The sky turned dark. There was a thunderous thunder. The village of Lau Kawar finally experienced a very terrible disaster. It rained heavily.
The village of Kawar was lost to the earth. The village was buried along with its inhabitants. Until the remaining large crater inundated by water. The crater was finally given the name Lau Kawar. That is the folk tale from Karo Regency, North Sumatra. Hopefully this is useful and lessons can be learned.
