The Origin of Simalungun

In ancient times, the Simalungun area was named Kampung Nagur, North Sumatra. In Nagur Village, there was a small kingdom named Tanah Djawo. This kingdom is very peaceful and safe, because it is led by a wise king and is accompanied by tough and capable hulubalangs. The kingdom had the Sinaga clan and had a Batak ethnicity.
The origin of Simalungun

In the outside of the Kampung Nagur area, stood two kingdoms with different clans. The kingdom was named Silou with the clan of Purba Tambak and the Kingdom of Raya which had the clan of Saragih Garingging. The three kingdoms live in harmony and peace. They make a pretty close friendship. All the people who live in the three kingdoms live peacefully. Seeing the three small kingdoms, finally attracting the hearts of other kingdoms to rule it.

At one point, it was reported that the Majapahit Kingdom from Java would attack the Tanah Djawo Kingdom. The Land of Djawo Kingdom immediately asked for help from neighboring kingdoms, namely the Silou Kingdom and the Kingdom Kingdom, to assist in warding off the attacks of the Majapahit Kingdom. The two kingdoms agreed to help the Tanah Djawo Kingdom to repel the Majapahit Kingdom attack.

With cooperation, the three kingdoms were able to repel the Majapahit Kingdom attack from the Nagur area. At other times, when the Silou Kingdom was also attacked by the Aceh Kingdom, the three kingdoms worked hand in hand to defeat the attack from the Aceh Kingdom.

At one point, thousands of soldiers from an unknown kingdom attacked the three kingdoms in turn. At first, the Land of Djawo Kingdom was attacked, then the Silou Kingdom, and finally the Kingdom Kingdom. Seeing the fact that these kingdoms were attacked by many troops in turn, they finally tried to defend themselves to protect their own kingdom. Due to the large number of enemies attacking, they eventually fell and lost.

According to folklore, the people living in the three kingdoms began to feel disturbed by their safety. They began to move and wanted to live elsewhere. However, they still move places or are known to live nomadically, this is because there is no safe and suitable area for them. Until finally, the residents of Nagur Village found a place called Sahili Misir. Sahili Misir is now known as Samosir Island, which is an island located in the middle of Lake Toba, North Sumatra. At Sahili Misir, they were finally able to open fields and farms to support their respective families.

After some time, the lives of the people in Sahili Misir became well and their lives became more prosperous than before. They carry out economic activities such as farming, farming and raising livestock. However, they still miss their hometown, which is Kampung Nagur. The village, which was once a safe and peaceful place, was led by a wise king, tough warriors, and the people lived safely and prosperously. They finally discussed to return to visit Nagur Village.

A resident elder asked the whole population "Who wants to go back to Kampung Nagur?"

It turned out that some residents did not want to return to Kampung Nagur. The community's elders also asked about their reaction in not wanting to return to their hometowns. However, some villagers argue that they feel at home living on the island. After all, it is impossible for livestock to be abandoned. Their children and grandchildren are happy and at home living on the island which is now called Samosir.

Finally, the local elders took the middle path and said, “Okay, for those who want to return to Nagur Village, let's get ready to go. For those who remain on this island, feel free to occupy it, I hope you will take good care of this place."

The residents who wanted to return to Kampung Nagur finally left with a long journey. They can't wait to get to the hometown that raised them. After arriving at the village they missed, how shocked they were. They became reminded of Kampung Nagur in its past. Kampung Nagur is bustling with residents who live safely, peacefully and peacefully. A hometown full of memories. Even though in the end, the village was ravaged by the enemies who came to attack. However, this situation is very far away when compared to the situation they are now in. Kampung Nagur turned into a place punctuated by thickets, there are no signs of life there. They became sad and not a few were crying sobbing.

"Sima-sima nalungun," they said.

With this statement, Kampung Nagur changed its name to "Sima-sima nalungun" which means a lonely area. Over time, "Sima-sima nalungun" changed to "Simalungun". Until now, the Simalungun area has become the name of a Regency in North Sumatra Province.
