Chapter 1: A Cozy Little Hut by the Sea
Once upon a time, in a peaceful coastal village called Air Manis in West Sumatra, there lived a humble family. They stayed in a cozy wooden hut right by the sun-kissed beach. The father worked as a hardworking fisherman, while his gentle wife, Mande Rubayah, cared for their playful little boy named Malin Kundang. Although they had very little food on their table, their home was filled with warmth and laughter.
Hoping to bring home a better life for his family, the father decided to set sail across the vast blue ocean to work in a distant land.
Months turned into years, but Malin’s father never returned. With a heavy heart, Mande Rubayah took over the big responsibility of raising Malin all by herself. Every morning, she baked delicious coconut cakes to sell around the village and fished along the rocky shore.
Malin grew up to be a smart, friendly, and energetic boy, though he had a cheeky, mischievous side! He loved chasing the village chickens around with a bamboo broom. One sunny afternoon, while darting after a rooster, Malin tripped over a jagged rock and tumbled hard onto the ground!
Malin Kundang: "Ouch, Bundo! My arm hurts so much!"Mande Rubayah: "Oh, my sweet child! Let Bundo bandage that up for you."
Although the wound healed over time, it left a dark scar on Malin's right arm—a small mark that would forever remember his playful childhood.
Chapter 2: A Big Dream to Cross the Ocean
As the years passed, Malin saw how hard his mother worked every single day. Seeing her tired hands broke his heart, and a big dream began to grow inside him.
One bright morning, a magnificent merchant ship anchored near Air Manis beach. Excitement filled Malin’s heart! He ran straight home to ask for his mother’s blessing.
Malin Kundang: "Bundo, look! A grand merchant ship has arrived! Please allow me to sail away and work overseas. If I succeed, Bundo will no longer need to walk around selling cakes in poverty. I will make us rich!"Mande Rubayah: "Oh, my dear boy... Bundo is so worried. Your father left across that very same sea many years ago and never came back. Bundo is terrified of losing you too."Malin Kundang: "Please believe me, Bundo! How long must we live like this? I promise with all my heart, as soon as I make my fortune, I will come home to you. I could never forget my beloved Bundo!"
Seeing the strong determination in her son’s eyes, Mande Rubayah softly wept and gave her permission. She packed seven tasty bundles of rice and held him tight before he boarded the ship under the kindly watch of the ship’s captain.
Mande Rubayah: "Be good overseas, my child. Work hard, stay honest, and always remember to come home."
Chapter 3: Pirates, Survival, and Success
Life at sea was a grand adventure! Malin worked tirelessly—sweeping the deck, mopping the floors, and learning all about sailing from the friendly crew.
However, one dark afternoon, disaster struck! Ruthless pirates ambushed the merchant ship. They raided the cargo and attacked the crew. Thinking quickly, Malin hid inside a tiny wooden compartment covered under heavy planks. Luckily, he survived the scary attack!
The damaged ship drifted silently across the ocean until it washed ashore near a lush, fertile village. The kind villagers rescued Malin, nursed him back to health, and welcomed him into their community.
Remembering his mother's wise words to always work hard and be honest, Malin took on odd jobs and saved every coin he earned. Soon, he started his own small trading business. People loved trading with him because of his fairness and honesty.
As time went by, Malin’s business grew bigger and bigger! He bought a fleet of giant merchant ships, hired hundreds of crew members, and married a lovely young woman from a wealthy family. Malin had transformed into the richest merchant in the land!
Chapter 4: The Unforgivable Denial
Back in Air Manis village, Mande Rubayah was getting older and weaker. Every single day, she stood by the seashore, gazing into the horizon and praying for her son's safe return.
One golden afternoon, a colossal, fancy ship pulled into the harbor of Air Manis. The villagers cheered with excitement, shouting that the famous, wealthy merchant Malin Kundang had returned!
Mande Rubayah’s heart leaped with joy! She ran to the dock as fast as her old legs could carry her. Standing on the ship’s deck was Malin, dressed in fine silk alongside his beautiful wife. As Malin raised his arm, Mande Rubayah spotted the familiar scar.
Mande Rubayah: "Malin! My darling boy! You have finally returned to Bundo!"
Overjoyed, she ran up and wrapped her frail arms tightly around him. But Malin felt deeply embarrassed. Looking at his poor mother's tattered clothes and dusty face in front of his wife and crew, his heart turned cold. He pushed her away roughly, knocking her to the ground.
Malin Kundang: "Get off me, you filthy old woman! Who are you? How dare you touch a wealthy man like me!"Mande Rubayah: "Malin... my son... don't you recognize your own mother? Look at me! Look at the scar on your arm from when you were a little boy!"Malin’s Wife: "Husband, is this poor old woman really your mother? You should not treat her so harshly."Malin Kundang: "Nonsense! My biological mother died a long time ago when I was small! This crazy beggar is just lying to steal my money! Guards, chase her away from my ship!"
Chapter 5: The Mother’s Curse and the Stone
Heartbroken and sobbing, Mande Rubayah was cast onto the cold, wet sand. Her soul was shattered by her own son's cruelty. She raised her trembling hands toward the heavens and uttered a sorrowful prayer.
Mande Rubayah: "Oh Almighty God... if that man is not my son, I forgive his harsh behavior. But if he is truly my child Malin Kundang, whom I raised with all my love, then I pray You punish his ungrateful heart and turn him into stone!"
Not long after, Malin ordered his crew to set sail. At first, the sea was calm, but suddenly, the sky turned pitch black! A violent hurricane swept across the water, bringing colossal waves that smashed Malin's luxury ship to pieces!
The next morning, the storm cleared. Malin Kundang’s body was washed back onto the shores of Air Manis Beach. In his final moments of terror and regret, he had fallen to his knees, prostrating toward the village to beg for his mother’s forgiveness. But it was too late—his hands, feet, and body turned hard and cold, turning completely into solid stone.

The Real Story Behind the Stone
While the legend of the ungrateful son is famous across Indonesia, the stone on Air Manis Beach that resembles a man prostrating was not actually created by a magical curse! The stone is a relief artwork created in 1980 by local artists Dasril Bayras and Ibenzani Usman to commemorate West Sumatra's most famous fairytale.
Visiting Air Manis Beach (Pantai Air Manis)
- Location: Situated in Padang Selatan District, Padang City, West Sumatra (about 15 km from the city center).
- Pisang Island: During low tide, visitors can walk across the shallow water directly to a small island called Pulau Pisang (Banana Island). Just make sure to walk back before high tide!
