The Story of Malim Deman

Once upon a time, Malim Deman was an orphan young man who lived with his mother & uncle. Every day Malim Deman works to help his uncle, working his mother's rice fields on the edge of the forest.

Next to Malim Deman and his family, there lived a kind-hearted widow named Mande Rubiah. Incidentally Mande Rubiah's house is adjacent to the rice field owned by Mrs. Malim Deman. They are like family. Mande Rubiah used to bring Malim Deman food while Malim Deman took care of his rice plants at night.
The Story of Malim Deman

Malim Deman Steals the Angel Shawl

One night, when Malim Deman was guarding his rice field, he felt thirsty. He then immediately went to Mande Rubiah's house to ask for a drink. As they approached Mande Rubiah's house, Malim Deman heard the voices of many women joking from behind Mande Rubiah's house. Feeling curious, he then peeked from behind Mande Rubiah's house. How shocked was Malim Deman when he saw seven women bathing in a pond. Their faces are very beautiful. Not far from where he was peering, Malim saw that there were seven shawls just lying around. Malim suspected that it was the scarf of the seven women. He then took a shawl and then hid it under his clothes.

By morning, the seven women immediately packed and used their scarves. A woman, later known as the Youngest Princess, was looking for her shawl. He asked the help of his sisters to find his shawl. His six sisters then searched for the Youngest Princess scarf. However, until early in the morning, Putri Bungsu's scarf was not found. Eventually the six youngest sisters were forced to go to heaven to leave the youngest daughter alone. It turns out that the seven of them are heavenly nymphs.

The youngest daughter stayed alone crying by the pool because she was afraid. Malim Deman did not waste the opportunity by approaching the Youngest Princess. Malim pretends to ask why he is crying. After chatting for a while, Malim Deman then offered the youngest daughter to stay at Mande Rubiah's house not far from the pool. Youngest daughter accepted Malim's invitation because she felt she had no other choice.

Malim Deman then invited the angel to Mande Rubiah's house. With a happy heart, Mande Rubiah accepted the Youngest Princess and recognized her as a child. Malim Deman then returned to his house to tell the incident to his mother. He then handed the youngest daughter's scarf to her mother and asked her mother to look after her.

Malim Deman Married the Angel

Since then Malim Deman has increasingly visited Mande Rubiah's house. Because they often met, gradually Malim Deman and the Youngest Princess fell in love with each other. Not long after they were married and blessed with a son they named Sutan Duano.

Youngest Princess feels very happy with her life. But after the birth of their son, Sutan Duano, Malim Deman turned into a slacker. He no longer worked in the fields, instead spending a lot of time at the gambling table. Sometimes he did not come home for days because he was busy gambling or cocking chickens. Her husband's behavior made the Youngest Princess sad. He often cried. He missed his sisters in heaven.

One day, the Youngest Princess was visiting her parents-in-law's house. Accidentally he found his scarf. Youngest daughter was very angry when she learned that the one who hid her scarf was her own in-laws. He suspected Malim Deman intentionally took his shawl while he was bathing. The youngest daughter then pretended to her parents-in-law that she would wash her father-in-law's clothes. When her parents-in-law were off guard, the Youngest Princess immediately took her shawl and then quickly returned home.

Youngest Princess Returns to Heaven

Arriving at the house, the Youngest Princess called Malim Deman's bodyguard named Bujang Selamat. Youngest daughter said that she already knew the secret of Malim Deman. It turned out that Malim Deman hid his scarf. He also said he would return to heaven by bringing his child, Sutan Duano. After saying goodbye to Mande Rubiah, the youngest daughter then flew to heaven to bring Sutan Duano.

Bujang Selamat immediately rushed to look for Malim Deman to the cockfighting place. After meeting, he immediately conveyed about the Youngest Princess & her son Sutan Duano.

Hearing Bujang Selamat's explanation, like being struck by lightning, Malim Deman felt shocked. He immediately ran home to prevent his wife from returning to heaven. But late, Mande Rubiah said that his wife had flown to heaven withbring their son Sutan Duano. Malim Deman was crying uncontrollably. He felt sorry that he had been lazing and wasting his family.

The Malim Deman story is a West Sumatra folklore that has a similarity to the story of Jaka Tarub from Central Java and Aryo Menak from East Java.
