Keong Mas

Once upon a time King Prabu Kertamarta, King of the Kingdom of Daha, had two daughters, Galuh Ajeng and his younger sister, Candra Kirana. The eldest, Galuh Ajeng has a beautiful face, but Candra Kirana is far more beautiful. The Youngest Candra Kirana has a fiancé, a handsome prince, crown prince of the Kahuripan Kingdom named Raden Inu Kertapati.

Secretly The Eldest, Galuh Ajeng also loved Raden Inu Kertapati. Therefore he was very jealous seeing Candra Kirana's luck. Galuh Ajeng then has the evil intention of getting rid of his sister from the palace of the Kingdom of Daha. He asked for the help of an evil witch. The evil witch is famous for having a very terrible curse spell. Galuh Ajeng asked the witch to curse Candra Kirana into something terrible. The witch agreed to the request Galuh Ajeng. But he gave the condition that Candra Kirana had to be expelled from the palace first so that he could freely enchant him.

After meeting the evil witch, Galuh Ajeng then returned to plot to slander Candra Kirana. As a result of that heinous slander, King Kertamerta became angry. The King then drove Candra Kirana out of the Daha Kingdom palace.

Candra Kirana Cursed into a Golden Conch (Keong Mas)

With a broken and sad heart, Candra Kirana then left the palace. He did not know why his own brother had slandered him. He walked indefinitely until finally arriving at a beach. It was then that an evil witch appeared before Candra Kirana. He issued a curse on Candra Kirana. "Turn you into a golden conch. The curse will only disappear if you meet your true love. " said the evil witch.

Suddenly Candra Kirana's body turned into a golden snail (Keong Mas) and then fell into the sea. Since that time no one in the Kingdom of Daha knows where the existence of Candra Kirana is.

Keong Mas Helped by a Kind-hearted Grandma

One day, a grandmother from Dadapan village was fishing in the sea using a net. When pulling the net, he saw a golden conch that was very beautiful. The grandmother brought her fish and golden snails to her hut. While about to cook, Grandma noticed that the golden snail was so beautiful, so beautiful. Finally he did not cook the golden conch. Instead, Grandma was kind enough to keep it in a jar for her to care for. He was given a meal of the golden snail then he closed the jar so he would not run away.

The next day the grandmother returned to fish in the sea. But unfortunately, he came home empty-handed. The unfortunate grandmother didn't get fish. Then he returned to his hut. Arriving at the hut, simply put, he felt very surprised because the hut had been served food, even though he did not feel it was cooked. Feeling hungry and having no other food, finally the grandmother ate it.

The following days a similar incident repeated. Every time he returned to his hut, always had food on his desk. Finally the grandmother tried to find out who cooked the food in her hut.

The next day the grandmother as usual pretending to go to the sea to catch fish with a net. After waiting for a while, the grandmother carefully returned to her hut to see if anyone else was cooking in her hut. When peering into his hut, the grandmother was surprised to see a golden snail coming out of the jar. The Golden Conch turned into a beautiful beautiful woman. Beautiful beautiful woman is then busy cooking in the kitchen.

The grandmother immediately entered the kitchen then asked Candra Kirana. "O golden conch. Apparently you are a beautiful girl. who are you really? " asked the grandmother.

"I am Candra Kirana, daughter of King Kertamarta, King of the Kingdom of Daha. I was slandered by my brother until he was driven out of the royal palace. An evil witch cursed me to be a golden conch. I can only return to being human if I meet my fiancé, Raden Inu Kertapati. " said Candra Kirana. After explaining about himself, he then turned back into a golden conch.

Raden Inu Kertapati Looking for Candra Kirana

While in the Kingdom of Daha, Raden Inu Kertapati was busy looking for her fiance and true love, Candra Kirana. The Crown Prince of the Kahuripan Kingdom felt sad. He was confused because he had searched everywhere but had not yet found Candra Kirana. But Raden Inu Kertapati remained determined to look for Candra Kirana until she found it.

The evil witch is worried by the persistence of Raden Inu Kertapati looking for Candra Kirana. He latertrying to thwart the efforts of Raden Inu Kertapati. The witch turns herself into a crow. He deliberately disguised himself as a crow then went to Raden Inu Kertapati. He then deliberately gave false information with the aim of misleading Raden Inu.

One day, Raden Inu Kertapati was touring Candra Kirana. On the way he met a grandfather who looked very tired. Raden Inu Kertapati then approached the grandfather and provided his food. The grandfather ate very deliciously.

After eating, the grandfather asked about Raden Inu Kertapati. "Thank you Raden for helping Grandpa. Actually who is this Raden? And what do you need? " said the grandfather.

Raden Inu Kertapati then explained about herself and her fiancé Candra Kirana who left the palace and disappeared somewhere. Raden Inu also explained about crows that helped him provide information.

The grandfather is actually a magic person. He learned that Raden Inu Kertapati was deceived by crows. The crow is actually the incarnation of the witch. "The crow is the incarnation of the witch. She wants to lead you astray. To prove it, let's wait for the crow to come." said the grandfather.

Not long after that the crow came before Raden Inu Kertapati. Not waiting for long, the grandfather then hit the head of the crow with his stick. The crow then turned to smoke and then disappeared.

"If Raden wants to meet Raden's fiance, go to the village of Dadapan. Raden's fiance is there. " said grandfather.

After expressing his thanks, Raden Inu Kertapati immediately spurred his horse towards the village of Dadapan. For days Raden Inu Kertapati headed for Dadapan village. He began to fatigue while supplies had begun to thin out. Not long after he arrived in the village of Dadapan. His supplies were finished, he also felt very thirsty.

Raden Inu Kertapati Successfully Found Candra Kirana

When Raden Inu Kertapati saw a hut, she then went to the hut. He knocked on the door of the hut to ask for drinking water because he felt very thirsty. When the hut door was opened, Raden Inu Kertapati was suddenly shocked. In the hut he saw an old grandmother with her fiancé that he had been looking for, Candra Kirana. Instantly the curse of the evil witch was destroyed. The conch body returns to being human as before.

Raden Inu Kertapati and Candra Kirana feel very happy to meet again. Raden Inu then invited Candra Kirana and her kind old grandmother to the Royal Palace of Daha. Upon arrival at the palace, Candra Kirana immediately told all the events that befell her. He also said that Galuh Ajeng, his own brother, had slandered him.

King Kertamerta became very angry knowing Galuh Ajeng committed a crime against his own younger brother. Even though King Kertamerta loved Galuh Ajeng, he still severely punished Galuh Ajeng for his evil deeds.

Despite asking for forgiveness, King Kertamerta continued to punish his eldest daughter. Galuh Ajeng was afraid of the threat of severe punishment from his father. He then ran away from the Royal Palace of Daha into the forest. In the forest, he accidentally fell into a cliff. Galuh Ajeng finally died at the bottom of a cliff. The Daha Royal Family mourned the death of Galuh Ajeng even though he had done evil.

A few weeks later, a marriage took place between Raden Inu Kertapati and Candra Kirana. Their marriage lasted for seven days and seven nights. The people of the Kingdom of Kahuripan and the people of the kingdom of Daha rejoiced in celebrating their marriage. Moreover, Raden Inu Kertapati will inherit the Kingdom of Kahuripan. The kind-hearted grandmother who helped gold conch now lives in the palace. Candra Kirana has regarded her as her own mother.

Keong Mas is a folklore originates from East Java. Tells about a daughter of King Daha, Candra Kirana who was cursed by an evil witch's grandmother became a golden conch. The story's background is similar to Raden Inu Kertapati's folklore. So you could say the two stories are just two variations that developed in the community.
