The Legend of Calon Arang: A Magical Story of Good vs. Evil

The Legend of Calon Arang: A Magical Story of Good vs. Evil
Once upon a time, in a peaceful kingdom called Kediri, there lived a powerful woman named Lady Calon Arang. She lived in a quiet village with her beautiful daughter, Princess Diah Ratna Mengali. Lady Calon Arang loved her daughter very much and wished for her to find a kind husband. However, rumors spread across the kingdom that Lady Calon Arang practiced dark magic. Frightened by these whispers, none of the young men dared to ask for the princess’s hand in marriage.

When Lady Calon Arang heard the gossip, her heart turned heavy with sadness, which quickly flared into anger.

"My faithful students," she called out to her four young apprentices. "The villagers speak falsely of us! We shall teach them a lesson they will never forget!"

"What shall we do to help you, Master?" asked her loyal student, Nyi Larung.

"On the night of the full moon, we will use our powers to send a strange illness across the land," Lady Calon Arang commanded.

That fateful night, eerie lights danced in the sky, and a hot wind swept through the kingdom. Soon, many villagers fell sick. King Airlangga, the wise ruler of Kediri, tried to send his bravest knights to stop the sorceress, but her magic was far too strong for them.

Determined to save his kingdom without further conflict, King Airlangga sought the guidance of a wise sage named Master Baradah.

"Your Majesty," Master Baradah said with a calm smile, "force will not solve this trouble. We must bring peace through understanding. I will send my brightest student, Prince Bahula, to ask for Princess Ratna Mengali’s hand in marriage. This will bring harmony back to her family."

When Prince Bahula arrived at Lady Calon Arang’s home with polite words and gifts, the mother’s heart melted. Overjoyed that her daughter had found a good match, she happily agreed to the wedding.

During his stay, Prince Bahula discovered the secret ancient scroll that gave Lady Calon Arang her magical powers. He brought the scroll to Master Baradah, who studied it carefully and realized that the sorceress’s true wish was simply to be forgiven for her past anger.

Master Baradah traveled to meet Lady Calon Arang in person. Standing before her with gentle eyes, he said, "Lady Calon Arang, the time for anger has passed. True power lies in kindness and peace."

Realizing the harm her anger had caused to the innocent villagers, Lady Calon Arang felt deep regret.

"Master Baradah," she whispered, "I wish to cleanse my heart and find true peace."

With a gentle blessing, Master Baradah used his spiritual wisdom to release her from her dark magic, guiding her soul toward eternal rest and forgiveness. From that day on, health returned to Kediri, and the people remembered the story as a lesson that love and understanding can heal even the deepest anger.

Give it a try! Follow Mpu Baradah's wisdom in confronting the powerful Calon Arang, all the way to a compassionate ending.
