The Origin of the Bali Strait

It is said that long ago in the kingdom of Daha (now the island of Bali) there lived a Brahmin named Sidi Mantra. He is famous for his magic. Sanghyang Widya or Batara Guru rewarded him with property and a beautiful wife. After years of living together, they finally got a child who they named Manik Angkeran.

Manik Angkeran loses gambling

Manik Angkeran then grew up to be a brave young man. But unfortunately, he has a bad character, which is like to gamble. At the gambling table, he often suffered losses, so he was forced to bet his parents' assets, even owed money to others.

At some point, he owed so much that he couldn't pay his debts. Manik Angkeran then asked his father for help to do something. The father, Sidi Mantra then fasted and prayed for the help of God.

After praying for a long time, he suddenly heard a magical voice, "Hi, Sidi Mantra, in the crater of Mount Agung there is a treasure guarded by a dragon named Naga Besukih. Go there and ask him to give him a little treasure. "

After hearing this magical voice, Sidi Mantra then went to Mount Agung by passing through various obstacles.

After struggling he finally arrived at the crater rim of Mount Agung. He then sat cross-legged. While ringing the bell he recited a spell and called out the name Naga Besukih. Because he was summoned, finally the Dragon came out.

After hearing the intention of Sidi Mantra's arrival, Naga Besukih stretched. As it stretched from its scales, gold & diamonds came out. Naga Besukih ordered Sidi Mantra to take it. After saying thank you, Sidi Mantra excused himself.

All the property he got was given to Manik Angkeran in the hope that he would never gamble again. But the reality says differently, in the hands of Manik Angkeran, his father's property returned to the betting table.

Manik Angkeran once again asked his father for help. But this time Sidi Mantra refused to help his son. Manik Angkeran then looked for a way to pay his debts. Manik Angkeran heard from his friend that the treasure was obtained from the crater of Mount Agung. Manik Angkeran knew to get there he had to cast a spell but he never learned about prayers & mantras.

He then stole his father's bell while his father was sleeping. He then went to Mount Agung with the bell. After arriving at the crater of Mount Agung, Manik Angkeran sounded his bell. Hearing the sound of the bell, immediately Naga Besukih came out of hiding. How scared Manik Angkeran was after he saw Naga Besukih. With a feeling of fear, Manik Angkeran conveyed his intention of coming to Mount Agung.

After the Dragon heard the intentions of Manik Angkeran's arrival, he said, “I will give you the treasure you asked for, but you must promise to change your behavior. Don't gamble anymore. Remember the law of karma. "

Manik Angkeran Killed by Naga Besukih

Manik Angkeran also agreed to Naga Besukih's request because he was fascinated by the gold, diamonds, and gems in front of him. Suddenly, there was an evil intention in his heart.

Wanting to get more treasure, Naga Besukih cut the tail quickly when the Dragon turned back to its nest. Naga Besukih felt shocked and in pain, his tail was cut by Manik Angkeran. Naga Besukih immediately tried to catch up to Manik Angkeran. Manik Angkeran immediately fled not being chased by the dragon. But because of Naga Besukih's supernatural powers, Manik Angkeran burned to ashes when his trail was licked by the Dragon.

The origin of the Bali Strait

News of Manik Angkeran's death was heard by his father, Sidi Mantra. Of course, as a parent, Sidi Mantra was very sad. Immediately he visited Naga Besukih to apologize and beg his son to be brought back to life. Naga Besukih agreed on the condition that the tail can return to normal.

With his supernatural powers, Sidi Mantra can restore the Dragon's tail. After Manik Angkeran was turned on, he apologized and promised to be a good person. Sidi Mantra knew that his son had repented but he also understood that they could no longer live together.

"My son, now you have realized your mistake. You can start a new life but you cannot live with us anymore. You have to live somewhere else. " said Sidi Mantra.

Strangeness ensued. In the blink of an eye, Manik Angkeran disappeared somewhere. In the former place where Manik Angkeran stood, a water source grew bigger and bigger so that it became a sea. With his staff, Sidi Mantra drew a line separating himself from his son.

According to folklore, today the place is known as the Bali strait which separates the island of Bali from the island of Java.
