In Setu Babakan, it is said that there is a figure of a white crocodile who is always loyal to the lake. The white crocodile was finally known as the guardian of Setu Babakan and its presence had become a conversation among the public. Until finally, the figure of the white crocodile was used as one of the Betawi folklore. Here is the story of the Origin of the White Crocodile in Setu Babakan.
In ancient times, there was a resident's residence on the outskirts of Babakan Setu. The residents are still ethnic Betawi. They live safely and peacefully. There is a young couple who are in love. They are still teenagers. They love each other regardless of caste and wealth. However, their love was hindered by the blessing of their parents. The girl comes from an affluent family. Their parents belonged to a prominent family. While the young man comes from a family that is less well off or is said to be poor. Therefore, their love journey of course encountered obstacles, because the girl's parents did not want their child to marry a poor young man aka their daughter's lover.
However, their love continues despite meeting secretly. They had a meeting without their parents knowing. If they are known by the girl's parents, the girl's father does not hesitate to scold and even beat their daughter's lover. The father always warns his daughter doesn’t to meet her dream lover again. However, the daughter could not deny her heart that she really loved the young man.
"I remember you my daughter, our family is a rich and respected family. It is impossible for the sky to merge with the earth. If you marry that young man, I really don't agree!" said the girl's father.
“But Dad, I love him very much. Do you have the heart if later I marry a man but I don't love him?" asked the girl with tears in her eyes.
“Of course, I will marry you to a rich widower who will propose to you. Your future husband is of course very much higher in position than that poor young man!” said the father.
Hearing her father's explanation, the girl couldn't do anything. Like being struck by lightning, she heard clearly the words of her father. It turns out that she has been betrothed to a man who she does not know what he looks like and has character. Will she obey her father's will? she doesn't know. Finally, the girl secretly went to meet her lover.
After arriving to meet her lover, the girl announced that she would be betrothed by her parents. The young man was confused, he just stayed silent and contemplated.
“My girl, I have known from a long time ago that your parents did not approve of our relationship. I understand that we have differences like sky and earth,” explained the young man.
"But I still love you," said the girl.
"Yeah, I love you too. But you must know, our condition is no longer possible, "said the young man.
"If that's the case, you'd better go abroad to improve your fate. Take care my darling. If you has succeeded, don't forget me, come back again. I will faithfully wait for you," the girl suggested with tears in her eyes.
"Oke, if that's your best advice. I will wander to improve fate for our future. I promise to come back again once it works. Pray for me to succeed," the man replied with a smile to the lover he loved.
Not long after, the man said goodbye. He rushed to go wander to improve his fate. He promised to come back again after achieving success and marrying the woman of his dreams.
With hope, the girl can meet again and marry the lover of her dreams. She hopes that the marriage with the man of her parents' choice will fail and she can marry the young man of her dreams if she is successful overseas.
But hope remains hope, almost a year the young man did not return. The girl was worried about the situation. Because, she has been proposed and the wedding will be held soon.
The girl was upset and sad. She was still at a loss as to what she should do. In the last days of letting go of her single life, she still hopes that the young man will come in front of her. Hope the young man has been successful in order to convince her parents so that they can get married.
On the last day before she got married, the girl desperately went to Setu (lake) Babakan. She didn't know what else to do with her parents. With a feeling of desperation, she threw herself into Setu Babakan not far from there.
She didn't die immediately. The crocodile demon in Setu Babakan felt sorry for the girl. Finally, the girl turned into a white crocodile. The white crocodile is still seen in Setu Babakan. It is said that if there are people who act indecently in the area, they will be eaten by white crocodiles in Setu Babakan.
