The Legend of Princess Runduk

Once upon a time, according to folklore, Raja Jayadana ruled the Kingdom of Barus Raya, centered in the City of Guguk and the City of Beriang near Kadai Gadang, North Sumatra today. Barus Raya Kingdom at that time had embraced Islam and was at its peak. In its heyday, the Kingdom of Barus Raya was rich in art and culture. Coastal communities already have cultures such as Serampang 12, Disturbing Gadang, Bakonde, Berinai, Going Down, Hooded, Clothed in Yellow Cloth, Yellow Umbrellas, sharpening teeth and others. Raja Jayadana was married to an empress whose beauty spread to other countries. Princess Runduk is the name of the empress.
The Legend of Princess Runduk

Many kings and merchants were attracted by the beauty of Princess Runduk. They want to propose to Princess Runduk even though she has a husband. Call it the King of mainland China who openly came to propose Princess Runduk, which of course the application was rejected. Then Raja Janggi from Sudan, Africa and Raja Sanjaya from the Kingdom of Mataram, Java also fell in love with Princess Runduk. These two kingdoms will send their troops to the Kingdom of Barus Raya only to seize Princess Runduk.

War with the Kingdom of Mataram, Java

According to West Sumatra folklore, Raja Jayadana certainly does not remain silent. He immediately alerted his troops to block the forces of the two kingdoms earlier. The first kingdom that came to attack was the Mataram Kingdom from the land of Java. Heavy fighting took place between the Islamic Kingdom of Barus Raya and the Hindu Kingdom of Mataram. After a long time of war, finally the Kingdom of Barus Raya suffered a crushing defeat from the Kingdom of Mataram. Royal Barus Kingdom troops are in a mess trying to save themselves. Raja Jayadana himself was killed in the war.

After the Kingdom of Barus Raya surrendered in the hands of the Kingdom of Mataram, Raja Sanjaya immediately proposed the marriage of Princess Runduk, widow of King Jayadana. But the proposal was rejected outright because Princess Runduk was Muslim while Raja Sanjaya was Hindu. Because of the rejection, finally King Sanjaya decided to arrest Princess Runduk. As mentioned in a poem:

Guguk City Bariang City
Third City in the Estuary
Chickens crowing during the day
Daughter Runduk Captured by Java

Princess Runduk Chased by King Janggi

The battle between the Kingdom of Barus Raya and the Kingdom of Mataram has ended. The Mataram Royal troops were very exhausted. This was exploited by Raja Janggi from Africa to attack the Mataram Royal forces which made the Mataram Kingdom troops in disarray. The city of Guguk and the palace of the Kingdom of Barus Raya were devastated by this war. Raja Janggi's troops finally managed to defeat the Mataram Kingdom easily.

In the midst of chaos, a group of loyal guardians of Raja Jayadana along with the ladies-in-waiting, took the opportunity to take Princess Runduk to Morsala Island. In this tense escape, a lot of equipment belonging to the group of Princess Runduk fell along the islands. So the islands are named according to the name of the goods scattered, such as Terika Island, Kain Kain Island, Princess Island, Situngkus Island and others.

Knowing Princess Runduk fled to Morsala Island, Raja Janggi immediately pursued. With the strength of the troops and complete equipment, of course it's easy for Raja Janggi to pursue Princess Runduk. When he had faced King Janggi trying to hold Princess Runduk, Princess Runduk fought back by hitting a bahar root stick, a stick inherited from King Barus, to the head of Raja Janggi. As mentioned in the following pantun:

Puteri Island Penginang Island
Third, Anak Janggi Island
Lapiang White Pillows
Toxins Play in the Heart
The service is good because it's white
but unfortunately the pillow is cheerful
a person who sleeps becomes a scratch

In other articles, it is stated:

pouring rain in Morsala
Flower of the orang-utans
the stars in the sky got it wrong
the waves on the sea endure
Talam Island Tarika Island
third island folding cloth
anchor broken broken lander
the bow zooms into another path

Daughter Bowing Jump Into the Sea

But after all, Princess Runduk is just a weak woman compared to Raja Janggi. Feeling tired in this pursuit, Princess Runduk finally decided to end his life by jumping into the sea. He is not willing if it must be controlled by Raja Janggi. Putri Runduk lost in the middle of the ocean without a trace.

Sikambang Bandahari, a maid of Princess Runduk in the royal palace of Barus Raya, was an eyewitness to this incident. He cried sadly for not being able to save Princess Barus. He was very angry with the cruelty of the kings who were dazzled by the beauty of Princess Runduk. Sikambang Bandahari continued to lament uninterruptedly, day after day. A legendary lament that tells the beauty of the princesses of Barus Raya, the fame and glory of the Kingdom of Barus Raya.
