The Mendong's family is very poor. Because they are poor, they often do not have money to buy food. Called Mr. Mendong because his daily job is making mat mendong. Helped by his wife, they make mats to sell to the city. They have a small child named Sumi. The boy's body was thin from lack of food. His clothes are tattered. They live in a small hut with a narrow yard.
One morning, Mr. Mendong woke up and told his wife that he dreamed of meeting his great-grandmother. His great-grandmother ordered that Mr. Medong hold a ceremony to invite poor people to slaughter the Ox.
"Mbokne, I dreamed of meeting my great-grandmother. He told me to do festivity to slaughter bulls and invite poor people. I am confused. We are just poor like this, where do we get money to hold a feast? Have we just sold our house? " said Mr. Mendong.
"How much do we sell if our house is sold? Our house is small. " said Mrs. Mendong.
"Tell you what Mbokne. What if we temporarily pawned the rich to the village? If we already have money, we will redeem it again. " said Mr. Mendong.
Finally, his son, Sumi, pawned his family to the rich in the village. The money is used to buy bulls, rice, cauldrons and other festivals. After everything is ready, Mrs. Mendong immediately cooks to feast. They then invited the poor to their homes to enjoy the food. Because Mrs. Mendong is good at cooking, in no time at all all the dishes are gone. Many of the villagers were surprised, where could Mr Mendong hold a feast while they were known as poor families.
After the feast, the poor have all returned home. Then Mr. Mendong and Mrs. Mendong sat stunned feeling sad thinking about how to redeem their favorite child, Si Sumi. Mrs. Mendong entered the house to clean up. How amazingly Mrs. Mendong saw the cauldron glowing sparkling. Upon seeing closer, Mrs. Mendong was surprised because the contents of the cauldron were full of gold and silver.
"Sir ... Sir ... Look at our cauldrons filled with gold and silver coming from nowhere!" Mrs. Mendong shouted.
Mr. Mendong was surprised and delighted to find that his quality was full of sparkling gold and silver. Soon Mr. Mendong sold some of the silver gold to the village then the money from the sale of silver gold was used to redeem his son.
Soon the villagers were in an uproar with Mr. Mendong's family who were suddenly very rich. There is someone rich but miserly who is curious about the origin of Mr. Mendong's wealth. He then asked Mr. Mendong about his wealth. The basis of Mr. Mendong who is honest and innocent, without hesitation he and his wife told how he could get his wealth from beginning to end.
Returning home, the rich but miserly immediately prepared a large feast. He hopes that by holding festivity for the poor, he will get a lot of gold and silver treasures like Mr. Mendong.
The rich miser then goes to the market to buy an ox. Basic miser, he bargained for an ox with a price too cheap. As a result he failed to buy an ox. The miser is not wits. He returned home and then slaughtered his pet dog. The meat is cooked for festivity. Invited poor people to his house to enjoy cooking. But at the will of the Almighty, during the recitation of the prayer, the dog which has become a side dish, miraculously lives again and bites the miser. People who attend festivity feel scared and run helter-skelter leaving the festivity. The miser remained, feeling the pain of being bitten by his own dog. Thus the folklore of East Java about Mr. Mendong and Mrs. Mendong.
