Chapter 1: The Boy Who Could Become Anything
Long, long ago, there lived a young man named Rangga Gading. He was very strong and very clever, and he had a wonderful gift. He had magic powers!
With his magic, Rangga Gading could change himself into anything he wished. He could become a bird, a tree, a stone, or even a splash of water. But Rangga Gading did not use his magic kindly. He used it to steal, and because he could change his shape, nobody ever caught him.
Chapter 2: The Five Buffaloes
One sunny day, Rangga Gading sneaked into a village and stole five buffaloes. He did it in broad daylight, just to show off his magic.
Soon the villagers discovered that their buffaloes were gone.
Villager: "Oh no! Our buffaloes have disappeared! Quick, everyone, find the thief!"
Rangga Gading watched them run about in a panic and giggled behind a bush.
Rangga Gading: "Ha ha ha! Look at them scurry like ants! Let me play a little trick on them."
With a wave of his hand, the magic began. He turned the buffaloes' feet around, so that their footprints pointed the wrong way! The villagers followed the tracks, but the more they walked, the farther they got from the buffaloes.
Villager: "Strange, the footprints go this way, but we still cannot find them!"Another Villager: "Oh dear, I think we have been walking in the wrong direction all along!"
Chapter 3: The Trick at the Market
The tired villagers sat down to think.
Villager: "I know! Rangga Gading must sell the buffaloes at the market. Let's wait for him there!"
But Rangga Gading was one step ahead. With another spell, he turned the buffaloes' curved horns downward. Then he changed their shiny black skin into snowy white!
When Rangga Gading walked into the market, the villagers looked right at him and did not recognize a single buffalo.
Villager: "Those white buffaloes with drooping horns are not ours. Our buffaloes were black!"
And so Rangga Gading escaped once again, laughing all the way home.
Chapter 4: The Secret Gold of Karangmunggal
One day, Rangga Gading heard some exciting news.
Traveler: "Have you heard? In Karangmunggal village, there is a sacred piece of land, and they say gold is buried beneath it!"Another Traveler: "Yes, but it is guarded day and night by soldiers and village elders. No one can go near it."
Rangga Gading's eyes sparkled.
Rangga Gading: "Guards? Ha! Nobody can stop me. That gold will soon be mine!"
He climbed to the top of a tall coconut tree and pulled off a long coconut frond. Then he whispered a magic spell, and the frond began to float! Rangga Gading hopped on and zoomed through the sky all the way to Karangmunggal.
Chapter 5: The Clever Cat
When he arrived, the guards were standing watch around the sacred land. Rangga Gading did not rush in. Instead, he shook his body and poof! He turned into a soft, sleepy little cat.
Guard: "Look, it's just a little cat. Shoo, shoo!"Elder: "Let it be. It is only a harmless kitty."
Nobody suspected a thing. The little cat tiptoed to the sacred land and began to dig, dig, dig with his paws. Soon, glittering gold appeared! He put every piece into his sack until it was full and heavy.
Then Rangga Gading rode his coconut frond back into the sky, feeling very proud of himself.
Chapter 6: The Old Man by the Lake
Before he reached his hiding place, Rangga Gading stopped to rest at a quiet lake. He opened his sack, took out a handful of gold, and laughed out loud.
Rangga Gading: "Ha ha ha! I am the greatest thief in the whole world!"
He hung the sack on a tree branch, took off his clothes, and splashed into the cool water.
But Rangga Gading did not know that someone was watching him. It was a wise old man with magical powers. He knew everything that Rangga Gading had done, and it made him sad.
The old man thought, "What a waste it is for such a talented boy to use his gifts for bad things. I must help him become a better person."
When Rangga Gading climbed out of the lake, he got a big surprise. An old man stood on the shore. He wore a white robe and a turban, and his face glowed like the moon.
Grandfather: "Rangga Gading, why do you steal and do such unkind things?"Rangga Gading: "Who are you, old man? How do you know my name? Before he could finish, Rangga Gading crumpled to the ground. His arms felt like jelly and his legs felt like noodles. He could not move at all!
Rangga Gading: "Oh, grandfather! Please, please stop! I am sorry! I promise I will change. I will be your student. Just make this weakness go away!"Grandfather: "Very well. But remember your promise, Rangga Gading."
The old man lifted his spell, and Rangga Gading's strength came back at once.
Chapter 7: A New Beginning
Rangga Gading kept his promise. He followed the wise grandfather to his school, where students came from far and wide to learn. There, he learned to use his magic to help others.
He studied very hard every day, and the more he learned, the more humble and kind he became. He gave up stealing for good and began helping the people around him.
