Once upon a time, in a land where the ocean whispered ancient secrets and the evening breeze sang enchanted melodies, there lay a peaceful fishing village on the northern coast of Java, near Pekalongan, Central Java.
In this tiny village lived an old, kind-hearted fisherman named Ki Buyut. Every morning, long before the sun painted the sky in shades of warm orange, Ki Buyut would push his humble wooden boat into the gentle waves.
"In the name of the Almighty... May the North Sea be kind to us today," Ki Buyut whispered with deep reverence, smiling at the rolling tide.
Ki Buyut was not a greedy man. Whenever he caught more fish than he needed, he never kept the extra for himself. Instead, he shared his catch with poor neighbors, lonely widows, and orphans. Because of his selfless heart, the entire village cherished him deeply.
The Golden Fish and the Midnight Secret
One afternoon, the sky turned a dark, moody gray. The wind howled through the palm trees, and the North Sea churned with towering blue waves.
"Whoosh! Splash!"
Ki Buyut’s small boat tossed violently upon the water. The other fishermen had long fled back to the safety of the shore, but Ki Buyut stayed behind. He wasn't being reckless; he simply couldn't bear to return empty-handed when families in the village were counting on him for food.
"O Guardian of the Seas, please grant a modest gift for my village..." Ki Buyut prayed amidst the roaring storm.
Suddenly, his net grew heavy! Pulling with all his remaining strength, he hauled the net aboard. Inside, thrashing gently, was the most breathtaking creature he had ever seen—a fish with scales that gleamed like pure gold under the flashes of lightning, and eyes that sparkled like ocean gems.
"Astonishing..." Ki Buyut gasped in awe. "A creature this magnificent is no ordinary fish. It must be a sacred spirit of the sea."
Rather than cooking the fish, Ki Buyut brought it home with utmost care and placed it gently into a large earthenware jar filled with clean water.
The Whisper of the Ocean Queen
That night, as Ki Buyut slept soundly from exhaustion, a sweet fragrance of jasmine filled his room. A soft, golden glow illuminated the darkness.
In his dream, there stood a magnificent woman of breathtaking beauty. She wore an emerald-green gown woven with shimmering pearls and a delicate crown that glowed like moonlight. Her face was as serene as the full moon over a quiet sea.
"Ki Buyut..." she called, her voice as soothing as the melody of a silver flute.Ki Buyut bowed low in respect. "Who are you, my noble lady?""I am Dewi Lanjar, Queen and Guardian of the North Sea," the lady replied with a warm smile. "The golden fish you saved today was my avatar. I came to test the hearts of the coastal people. And you, Ki Buyut, have shown true purity and love toward the sea and your kin.""Forgive my humble dwelling, Queen Dewi Lanjar," Ki Buyut replied, deeply moved."From this day forth," the Queen continued, "continue to guard my sea with your kindness. As long as humanity honors the ocean, the ocean will grant them life."
When Ki Buyut awoke at dawn, the golden fish had vanished. In its place at the bottom of the jar rested a massive, iridescent seashell that sparkled with rainbow colors. From then on, Ki Buyut received quiet signs from the Queen. The North Sea remained calm, granting the villagers abundant catches and clear skies.
The Greed of the Foreign Traders
Years passed peacefully until a fleet of massive foreign ships arrived at the coast. They were greedy traders who cared nothing for local traditions or the balance of nature.
They cast huge, heavy nets that tore up the delicate coral reefs, trapped baby fish, and dumped dirty waste into the crystal-clear waters.
Ki Buyut approached the leader of the traders with gentle concern.
"My friends," Ki Buyut pleaded softly, "take only what you need from these waters. Please do not destroy the coral where fish nest, nor pollute the sea. The North Sea has a guardian who grows angry when her home is harmed."The lead trader threw his head back and laughed mockingly. "Ha-ha-ha! Spare me your bedtime stories, old man! The sea belongs to whoever has the biggest ships! We fear no imaginary sea spirit!"
They continued to plunder the sea relentlessly, ignoring every warning.
The Wrath of Dewi Lanjar
That evening, the sky above the coast turned pitch-black. A cold wind carried the sharp scent of salt. High above the churning waves, the figure of Dewi Lanjar materialized. Her face was no longer soft and smiling; it was fierce and full of majesty.
Her voice echoed through the midnight breeze directly into Ki Buyut’s heart.
"My faithful Ki Buyut..." Dewi Lanjar whispered, her voice reverberating like thunder. "Your warnings fell on deaf ears. These greedy men have defiled my home and threatened your people's future. The ocean shall deliver its judgment!""Have mercy on their ignorance, my Queen..." Ki Buyut pleaded gently."This punishment is a lesson, Ki Buyut! So that humanity remembers that nature is not something to conquer!"
In an instant, a monstrous storm raged across the waters! Waves as tall as palm trees crashed onto the traders' fleet. The gale shattered their masts and splintered their heavy wooden hulls.
The arrogant traders screamed in terror amidst the roaring ocean. "Forgive us! We promise never to harm this sea again!"
By sunrise, the storm vanished as quickly as it had arrived. The morning sun shone peacefully over the water. Strewn across the beach were the shattered remnants of the traders' ships. Not a single life was lost, but their grand fleet and treasures were entirely swallowed by the sea.
Terrified and humbled, the traders fled the coast on foot, swearing never to return.
A Timeless Lesson from the Javanese Coast
Harmony returned to the coastal village. Children laughed as they ran along the pristine white sands, and fishermen set sail each morning with deep respect for the ocean's majesty.
To this day, the people of Northern Java—especially around Pekalongan—remember the legend of Dewi Lanjar. She remains a beloved protector for those who approach the sea with honesty and care, and a solemn reminder that we must always live in harmony with nature.
Moral Values in the Story:
- Respect Nature: The sea is a source of life that must be cherished, not exploited or polluted.
- Reject Greed: Take only what you need and share your blessings generously with others.
- Humility & Stewardship: True strength lies in caring for the world around us, for nature always responds to how we treat it.
