In ancient times, there was a kingdom in the Aceh region, precisely in Simeulue. The kingdom was led by a king who loved his son very much. His son's name is Rohib. Rohib is very spoiled by his parents. All the wishes of the Rohib are always granted. The king sent his son to the best school in town. The spirit who grew up as a teenager still carried his spoiled nature, until finally he could not finish his studies.
The spoiled Rohib returns to the palace before completing his studies. Rohib's attitude made his father angry. He could not stand the spoiled attitude of Rohib. The king was furious and decided that Rohib should be hanged, because he was not fit to continue the reign of the kingdom. Due to the consideration of the empress, the king finally only expelled the Rohib from the palace armed with money to survive.
The spirit was expelled from the palace
Finally, Rohib was expelled from the palace. Rohib was forced to go from village to village, wandering aimlessly. Sometimes the Rohib sleeps under a tree, in an empty hut, or the house of a resident who is willing to accept his condition.
As time passed, the wandering Rohib didn't look like a child who was. Rohib looks shabby with makeshift clothes. While on his way, Rohib met several children who shot birds with slingshots.
Rohib seemed to feel sorry for the birds who were victims of the children's savagery, causing Rohib to be annoyed with the children.
"My brothers, you must do not shoot at the bird. The birds want to live freely, they also have the right to live,” said Rohib.
"Who are you ? How dare you reprimand us!” said one of the group of children.
"If you don't shoot the bird again, then I will give you money," Rohib then gave the money from the supplies his parents gave him.
The money for the supplies eventually ran out, after Rohib gave them to beggars, residents who were willing to accept his presence when Rohib wanted to take shelter and rest in a house, children who killed birds with a slingshot, or people in need. That is the attitude of Rohib, he is a spoiled child, but has a noble heart and is polite to others.
Rohib meets snake king
Rohib has no more supplies. He didn't know where to rest. Until finally he was tired and fell asleep under a shady tree. Not long after, a large snake came to Rohib. Rohib, who was fast asleep at that time, suddenly woke up with the sound of the leaves rubbing against the snake. Seeing a large snake in front of him, Rohib was shocked and tried to run away. But the snake tried to stop Rohib's steps by speaking like a human.
"Don't be afraid young man, I am the king of snakes in this forest," said the snake.
"Oke .. well ...," said Rohib with a deathly pale face.
"I want to ask, what are you doing here?" asked the snake.
Rohib told his story until he finally arrived under the shady tree. Hearing Rohib's explanation, the snake was amazed at the kindness of Rohib who helped humans and other living beings.
“Rohib, you are a good boy. In return for your kindness, I will give you this thing," the snake stuck out its tongue. He gave an object to the Rohib.
Mentiko Betuah
"What is the name of this thing?" asked Rohib.
“This thing is called Mentiko Betuah. This thing can grant you anything you want," said the snake.
Finally the snake said goodbye and Rohib did not forget to say many thanks to the snake. Rohib hopes that the object will make his father less angry with him.
"Hi Mentiko Betuah, I ask for a lot of money," said Rohib.
Finally, a lot of money appeared in front of Rohib. Rohib looks happy. He brought the money back to his father in the palace. When he arrived at the palace, the father was happy because his son had succeeded and brought a lot of money.
“This Betuah Mentiko brings good luck to me. How about I make this thing into a ring, so this thing can be carried easily wherever I go," Rohib muttered.
According to folklore from Aceh, Mentiko Betuah was finally brought by Rohib to a ring maker. The ring maker who knew the magic of Mentiko Betuah finally took the object away. When Rohib found out that Mentiko Betuah had been taken away by a ringmaker, he sent his three friends, namely a mouse, a cat and a dog, to look for the Mentiko Betuah.
Finally, from the results of tracking the dog, the ring maker was found sleeping on the bank of the river. Mentiko Betuah was hidden by the ring maker in his mouth. To remove the Betuah Mentiko, the cat inserts its tail into the ringmaker's nostril. The ringmaker sneezed and took out the Mentiko Betuah. The object was caught by the mouse without the knowledge of the dog and cat. The mouse only said that Mentiko Betuah fell into the river. Dogs and cats were finally busy looking for the object to the bottom of the river.
Mentiko Betuah brought by the mouse was finally handed over to Rohib. Rohib was very happy with the success of the mouse's business. After some time, the cat and dog reported that they had not found Mentiko Betuah to Rohib. However, to the surprise of the cat and dog, Mentiko Betuah had reached Rohib's hands. Cats and dogs know that this is the cunning behavior of mouse. Until then, dogs and cats grew to hate mice.
Mentiko Betuah is a folk tale originating from Aceh (Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam). This story tells about a king's son named Rohib. Rohib was very spoiled by his parents. All the wishes of the Rohib are always granted. Although spoiled, Rohib is actually a good boy. Once, Rohib disappointed his parents and made him expelled from the palace.
Such is the folk tale from Aceh entitled Mentiko Betuah. The moral message that we can take from this folklore is that we must always do good, and do not take cunning actions that can lead to hostility. Thank you for visiting this blog.
