Chapter 1: The Shirt by the River

Once upon a time, in a quiet little village nestled beside a great forest, there lived a young man. He was known far and wide for his kindness and his tireless hard work. Every single day, rain or shine, he walked into the forest to gather wood, always with a cheerful whistle on his lips.

One bright and sunny morning, he set off just as he always did, his heart light and happy. But as he walked along the riverbank, his foot suddenly caught on something soft, and he tumbled forward with a surprised little "Oof!"

He sat up and looked around to see what had tripped him. There, lying gently on the grass, was the most beautiful shirt he had ever seen. It shimmered like morning dew and sparkled like starlight.

"What a strange and wonderful thing," he whispered to himself, turning it over in his hands. "It must belong to no one... surely it's alright if I keep it safe."

And so, without knowing the magic he now held, the young man folded the shining shirt and tucked it away to take home.

Chapter 2: The Weeping Angel

The young man continued on his way, humming softly, when suddenly a beautiful woman appeared on the path ahead of him. Her hair flowed like silk, and her eyes shone with a light unlike anything he had ever seen. She looked at him with hope and worry all at once.

Angel: "Excuse me, kind sir... have you, by any chance, found a set of angel's clothes near the river?"

The young man's heart skipped a beat. He had never seen anyone so lovely in all his life. And in that very moment, he realized the truth — the shirt he had found was no ordinary shirt at all. It belonged to an angel, and she was standing right in front of him!

But love can make even the most honest hearts tell a lie. Afraid that she would vanish forever if he told the truth, the young man shook his head.

Young man: "No... I haven't seen anything like that. I'm sorry."

The angel's shoulders drooped, and her eyes filled with sorrow.

Angel: "Oh no... without my clothes, I can never fly back up to heaven again."

Seeing her tears, the young man felt his heart ache with guilt and tenderness all at once. He stepped closer and spoke gently.

Young man: "Please, don't cry. If you have nowhere to go, you may come stay at my home... and if you would have me, I would be honored to make you my wife."

The angel looked at him for a long moment, and then, with a small, sad smile, she agreed. And so the two were married, and the angel came to be known throughout the village as Princess Tanabata.

Chapter 3: The Dove's Discovery

Seasons turned into years, and the young man and Princess Tanabata lived together happily. But one ordinary afternoon, a little dove fluttered in through the window and landed inside their home.

The curious dove hopped about, pecking here and there, until — quite by accident — it uncovered a bundle tucked away in a quiet corner. It was the shining angel's shirt!

Princess Tanabata gasped as she saw it glimmering in the sunlight.

Princess Tanabata: "My clothes... my angel's clothes! At last, I've found them!"

Joy and sorrow swirled together in her heart. She was overjoyed to finally be able to return to the heavens where she belonged — but she also knew that leaving would mean leaving behind the husband she had grown to love so dearly. Taking a deep breath, she went to find him.

Princess Tanabata: "My husband... I have found my angel's clothes. I must return to heaven now."

The young man's face fell in shock.

Young man: "But... if you leave, what will become of me? I will be so terribly lonely without you."

Princess Tanabata took his hands in hers and gave a gentle, knowing smile.

Princess Tanabata: "Do not worry, my love. We will meet again. Weave one thousand pairs of straw sandals, and bury them beneath the bamboo tree. Only then can our paths cross once more."

Chapter 4: The Bamboo That Touched the Sky

And so, with a heavy heart, Princess Tanabata rose up into the clouds, and the young man was left alone on earth. But he did not give up. Every single day, from morning until night, he wove straw sandals with steady, determined hands.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. Finally, the young man had made what he believed to be one thousand pairs of sandals. He carried them to the bamboo grove and buried them carefully beneath the roots of the tallest bamboo tree.

To his amazement, the bamboo began to grow — taller, and taller, and taller still — stretching higher than the clouds themselves!

But there was a problem. In his haste, the young man had only made nine hundred and ninety-nine pairs — one pair short of a thousand. Because of this, the bamboo grew just barely short of reaching heaven's gate.

Still, the young man would not be stopped. With every ounce of his strength and all the love in his heart, he climbed and climbed until, at last, he reached the very top.

Young man: "Princess Tanabata! My beloved wife... it is I, your husband! I have come for you!"

From far away, Princess Tanabata heard his voice calling through the clouds. Her heart leapt with joy, and she rushed toward the sound as fast as her feet could carry her. At long last, after so much time apart, the two were reunited.

Chapter 5: The Test in the Garden

Soon after, Princess Tanabata's father came to meet the young man who had won his daughter's heart.

Princess Tanabata: "Father, this is my husband. While I lived on earth, I fell in love and was married to him."

Now, truth be told, Princess Tanabata's father was not entirely pleased that his daughter had married an earthly man. But seeing how much love shone between them, he decided to allow it — under one condition.

Princess Tanabata's father: "You may stay here in heaven with my daughter, but only if you can guard the pumpkin garden for three full days. Remember this well — you must not eat a single pumpkin, no matter what happens. If you do, great disaster will follow, and you will be sent back to earth."

The young man nodded firmly, determined to prove himself worthy.

Young man: "I understand. I will guard the garden with all my care."

Chapter 6: The Flood from Heaven

For two days, the young man kept his promise faithfully, watching over the pumpkin garden without fail. But on the third day, the weather turned scorching hot, and his throat grew painfully dry.

Unable to bear his thirst any longer, he reached for just one pumpkin, thinking surely no one would notice.

Young man: "Just one bite... surely it won't cause any harm."

But he was terribly wrong. The moment he bit into the pumpkin, water came pouring out — more and more, faster and faster — until the garden overflowed into a rushing river! The heavenly kingdom itself began to flood.

When Princess Tanabata's father learned what had happened, his heart filled with sorrow and disappointment. With a heavy heart, he had no choice but to send the young man back down to earth.

Chapter 7: One Night a Year

And so, the young man and Princess Tanabata were separated once more — he upon the earth below, and she among the stars above. Though their hearts remained bound together, the great distance between heaven and earth kept them apart.

But even now, once every year, on the seventh day of the seventh month, the stars align just enough for husband and wife to meet again — if only for a single, precious night.
