The Origin of the Mermaid Fish

It is said that long ago in the Sulawesi area, there lived a husband and wife with three children. In meeting their daily needs, they earn a living by fishing in the sea. They also grow vegetables in the fields. Before his father went to the fields, they used to have breakfast together.
The Origin of the Mermaid Fish

One morning, as usual before his father went to the fields, they ate together. Incidentally, the family's fish supply is quite large so that it will not run out in one meal. The husband asked his wife to save fish to eat after he worked later.

By noon, the youngest child was starving from playing all day. His mother then gave him a plate of rice with fish side dishes. After eating, the youngest was still hungry and asked for more. The mother sees that the fish side dish is low. She also remembered her husband's message to save a side dish of fish to eat after work. However, the youngest continued to whine for more food. Finally, the mother gave all the fish side dishes to her youngest child.

In the evening, their father came home hungry from a long day's work. He asked his wife to provide food.

"My wife, where is the fish that you set aside earlier. I am very hungry." her husband asked his wife.

"Ouch sorry, the youngest had finished it. He's starving so he's running here and there. " replied his wife.

"What? Not that I told you to put the fish aside. " her husband shouted angrily.

His wife explained that the fish was eaten by her own son but the husband still did not accept it and continued to scold his wife. Because she was constantly scolded, the wife was very sad and then cried. She could not stand the behavior of her husband who was often angry. He thought of leaving the house.

One night when everyone was sleeping soundly, the wife came out of the house and rushed to the sea. The next day, the husband and his children were looking for their wife. They screamed for their mother but there was no answer. The children then went out looking on the beach while still calling out their mother.

"My children, I am here." replied his mother. It turned out that their mother was in the sea. They were very happy to find their mother. Their mother then gave them lots of fish to take home as a side dish for them. The children then asked their mother to come home. But the mother refused because she could not stand her husband's behavior. Finally the children came home with lots of fish without bringing their mother home.

When they got home, the children told their father that they had found their mother in the sea. They also told their father that they had brought lots of fish that their mother had given them. The father told the children to grill the fish for a side dish. The father does not seem the slightest bit concerned with the mother.

"After eating, save the fish for lunch side dishes." said his father.

At noon, the father comes home and has lunch with his children. The children asked their father to save the fish for their mother. But his father refused on the grounds that his mother did not spare fish for him.

"Father, save a little fish for mother." said one of the children at lunch.

"Why leave fish for your mother? Your mother didn't spare me any fish before. " replied the father curtly. Hearing this answer, the children became very sad. Their father didn't care about Mother at all.

The next day, the children went back out to sea to find their mother. All day they walk on the edge of the beach calling their mother but they can not find her. Then a voice called them.

"Children, come here I am your mother." a voice called them.

The children immediately looked for the source of the sound. When they found it, they were very surprised because the mother's body was covered with fish scales, like a mermaid fish. They immediately walked away, feeling that it was not their mother.

"No, our mother doesn't have scales." said the youngest who was closest to his mother.

Seeing this fact, the mother became very sad. While the children left, looking for and calling for their mother, the mother immediately returned to the sea. Mother decides that she will never return to her house.

The origin of the mermaid fish is based on the regional folklore of the people of Central Sulawesi, at first it was a housewife who left her family because she felt sad that her husband kept scolding her.
